Emerging Leaders in the Arts: AKO ITO

Join us for a pleasant evening to celebrate the cultural fabric of the Filipinx/a/o community and diaspora in Santa Barbara County. By celebrating together with food, music, vendors, art, and storytelling, we including myself as a Filipinx/a of Tagalog descent create belonging not only through our shared experiences but also to honor the unique aspects of each other's experiences. Let us claim, appreciate, and love the parts of ourselves that demonstrate our Filipinx/a/o identity.

Free Workshops with Braille Institute in August

Braille Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is to positively transform the lives of those with vision loss. We offer a broad range of free programs, classes and services serving thousands of students of all ages helping to demonstrate that vision rehabilitation is a beginning, not an end.

We serve the community from seven centers, and hundreds of community outreach locations throughout Southern California, and lead popular national programs like Braille Challenge and Cane Quest. Our staff and volunteers understand losing your vision can be scary, but we believe it is not the end of independence, but a new way of living.

A variety of free classes, workshops and support groups are available to help you or a loved one stay active, remain independent and enjoy connections with others.

Sign up for individual events, workshops, and seminars – free and open to everyone. Register online or call us at (805) 682-6222 Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.

DISTRICT ELECTIONS: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

The League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara and the City of Carpinteria are co-sponsoring a Voter Education Forum on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 6pm to discuss the move to electing candidates by district instead of at large in the cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria and the county’s school districts.

The Forum, which was initiated by the City of Carpinteria, will be a 90-minute hybrid (via Zoom and in-person) panel discussion at Carpinteria City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Avenue Carpinteria, and via Zoom. It will also be livestreamed on the League’s Facebook page.

The mayors of Carpinteria, Goleta, and Santa Barbara have confirmed their participation: Wade Nomura of Carpinteria, Paula Perotte of Goleta, and Randy Rowse of Santa Barbara. Dr. Susan Salcido, the newly reelected Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools, will join them on the panel. Chris Carson, Past President of the League of Women Voters of the United States, will moderate and discuss the California Voting Rights Act.
