Graduates of the Community Environmental Council's Climate Stewards certification program are equipped to play an active role in the statewide effort to advance rapid and equitable solutions to the climate crisis in their community – and make a positive impact throughout the Central Coast.
Motivated by Brazil’s astonishing birds and a sense of urgency to see and photograph them prior to further declines, Santa Barbara bird enthusiasts Satie Airamé , Jeff Chemnick, and Mark Holmgren teamed up with Brazilian biologist and bird guide Raphael E. F. Santos on multiple expeditions to Brazil. The indefatigable explorers traveled to remote localities with complicated logistics to observe and photograph wild birds in their natural habitats. This presentation features a collection of stunning bird photographs as well as stories, insights, and (often humorous) commentary by the birders as they share their experiences with the unforgettable birds of Brazil.

On Thursday, January 26 at 7 p.m., the Mental Wellness Center (MWC) will host its monthly National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) event with this month’s speaker, Brandon Staglin. Staglin, president of One Mind, a brain health nonprofit committed to healing the lives of people impacted by brain illness and injury, will share his story of resilience after being diagnosed with Schizophrenia.
SBMM) presents The Lure of Lighthouses & Dancing Waves, an exhibit featuring more than 35 photographs of lighthouses and waves by the renowned and Emmy Award-winning surfing photographer and videographer Dan Merkel. The lighthouse photographs include images of lighthouses from near and far—from Cape Elizabeth and Cape Hatteras on the East Coast and Point Loma and Point Pinos on the West to Portugal and Australia. The images are accompanied by Dan’s breath-taking photos capturing waves throughout the world. Beginning on Thursday, January 26, the exhibit will be on view in SBMM’s Gallery and Munger Theater through August 27, 2023.

Julie M. Rivett, Dashiell Hammett’s granddaughter and archivist, will discuss Hammett's noir in literature and how it was adapted for the big screen.
Based on the 1930 novel by Dashiell Hammett, The Maltese Falcon is a 1941 American film noir written and directed by John Huston in his directorial debut, and indebted to the 1931 movie of the same name. It stars Humphrey Bogart as private investigator Sam Spade and Mary Astor as his femme fatale client. Gladys George, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet co-star, with the latter appearing in his film debut. The story follows a San Francisco private detective and his dealings with three unscrupulous adventurers, all of whom are competing to obtain a jewel-encrusted falcon statuette.
