The Lure of Lighthouses & Dancing Waves Photographs by Dan Merkel

SBMM) presents The Lure of Lighthouses & Dancing Waves, an exhibit featuring more than 35 photographs of lighthouses and waves by the renowned and Emmy Award-winning surfing photographer and videographer Dan Merkel. The lighthouse photographs include images of lighthouses from near and far—from Cape Elizabeth and Cape Hatteras on the East Coast and Point Loma and Point Pinos on the West to Portugal and Australia. The images are accompanied by Dan’s breath-taking photos capturing waves throughout the world. Beginning on Thursday, January 26, the exhibit will be on view in SBMM’s Gallery and Munger Theater through August 27, 2023.

Birding with Ted Mullen

Celebrate Spring Equinox by birding at the Arroyo Hondo Preserve!

Come join the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County and Ted Mullen, a local wildlife biologist with over 25 years of experience. We will take a walk through the canyon focusing on the sights and sounds of the valley and its avian inhabitants. Ted is a trained ornithologist and avid bird watcher and will help familiarize you with our local species. (Binoculars not provided.)

Straight from The Source: A Book Signing and View into The Source Family Archive with Isis Aquarian

Join the Library as we host Source Family historian and documentarian Isis Aquarian for a conversation and book signing featuring the new book Family: The Source Family Scrapbook. We invite you to explore the history of the Source Family, a commune in Los Angeles in the early '70s based on natural food, spiritual practices and psychedelic rock, through the viewing of rare photographs and home movies from The Source Family archive. This event is in conjunction with the Library's new exhibition, Lifting the Veil.

Copies of Family: The Source Family Scrapbook will be available for purchase.

Event and exhibition are free and open to the public. It is located in the Special Research Collections Area of the Library.
