The Peaceful Sea: Paintings by Kevin A. Short

Continuing its celebration of coastal living, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is thrilled to present The Peaceful Sea: Paintings by Kevin A. Short, an exhibition featuring more than 30 seascapes and ocean-themed landscapes by the renowned contemporary painter and Santa Barbara native. Thanks to the generous support of Mimi Michaelis, June G. Outhwaite Charitable Trust, Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation, the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation, and American Rivera Bank, the presentation will be on view to the public from August 11 through December 31, 2022.

Abstraction after Psychology

Suzanne Hudson discusses mid-century abstraction in relation to psychology and projective testing and examines the ways that the use of images in clinical settings conditioned audience encounters with art.

Suzanne Hudson is an art historian and critic based in Los Angeles, where she is Associate Professor of Art History and Fine Arts at the University of Southern California. Hudson’s work has been supported by the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA), Creative Capital | The Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Dedalus Foundation, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, among others. Her writing has appeared in such publications as Parkett, Art Journal, and October. A long-term contributor to Artforum, she also has written numerous essays for international exhibition catalogs and artist monographs. She is the author of books including "Robert Ryman: Used Paint" (MIT, 2009), "Agnes Martin: Night Sea" (Afterall/MIT, 2017), and "Contemporary Painting" (Thames & Hudson, 2021). She is currently at work on "Better for the Making: Art, Therapy, Process," a study of the therapeutic origins of art-making within American modernism.

Trust president Tony Budrovich shares Catalina Island’s storied past and bright future on the occasion of the conservancy’s golden anniversary

Honoring the Catalina Island Conservancy’s past and future roles in protecting the island’s natural beauty, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) presents “Catalina Island Conservancy: 50 Years of Island Stewardship,” a live talk to be held at the museum on Thursday, August 18, 2022, at 7 pm. Conservancy president and CEO Tony Budrovich will illuminate the trust’s history of preservation and share his vision forward. This in-person event is free for SBMM Navigator Circle Members, $10 for all other members, and $20 for the general public; registration is required.
