Free Workshops with Braille Institute in August

Braille Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is to positively transform the lives of those with vision loss. We offer a broad range of free programs, classes and services serving thousands of students of all ages helping to demonstrate that vision rehabilitation is a beginning, not an end.

We serve the community from seven centers, and hundreds of community outreach locations throughout Southern California, and lead popular national programs like Braille Challenge and Cane Quest. Our staff and volunteers understand losing your vision can be scary, but we believe it is not the end of independence, but a new way of living.

A variety of free classes, workshops and support groups are available to help you or a loved one stay active, remain independent and enjoy connections with others.

Sign up for individual events, workshops, and seminars – free and open to everyone. Register online or call us at (805) 682-6222 Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.

The mayors of Carpinteria, Goleta, and Santa Barbara have confirmed their participation: Wade Nomura of Carpinteria, Paula Perotte of Goleta, and Randy Rowse of Santa Barbara. Dr. Susan Salcido, the newly reelected Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools, will join them on the panel. Chris Carson, Past President of the League of Women Voters of the United States, will moderate and discuss the California Voting Rights Act.

Joan Miró in Time and Space

This lecture will review some works—paintings, objects, sculptures—by the great Catalan artist Joan Miró. Charles Palermo will offer readings of works in the hope of showing how Miró implies movement and scale in his works. The result is fictional worlds with their own sense of time and place, which nevertheless stand right before us.

Family 1st Thursday

Bring the whole family to enjoy Teaching Artist-led activities in the Museum’s Family Resource Center. Play with patterns of repeated shapes by creating a print in white ink on boldly-hued paper, inspired by Bridget Riley’s "Annul" (1965). Afterward, enjoy the galleries until 8 pm.
