If you have a passion for art and are interested in serving the community, the SBMA Docent Program is a rewarding and supportive environment to learn and have fun.
Volunteer docents engage with visitors of all ages through guided tours to make works of art accessible to everyone. An art background is not required. Diverse applicants with an interest in learning about art, working with students, and facilitating positive Museum experiences for visitors are encouraged to apply. In addition to touring, docents enjoy an extensive program of continuing education provided by curators and local experts. The year-long training course begins each September.
If interested, plan to attend a Recruitment Reception on Thursday, May 18, 3 to 5 pm at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
For more information or to attend, visit www.sbma.net/docent or contact education@sbma.net.

All skill levels are invited to experience the tradition of sketching from original works of art in The Private Universe of "James Castle: Drawings from the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation and James Castle Collection and Archive." Museum Teaching Artists provide general guidance and all materials.
Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in this hands-on informal workshop with SBMA Teaching Artists. Each month explore a different medium—clay, metal, ink, wood, photography, paper—inspired by works of art in the Museum’s collection or special exhibitions. In August, sketch a display of grapes in ebony pencil on stretched muslin, then add color to the drawing with chalk pastels.
Seth Bogart is an artist of many trades: pop ceramicist, punk frontman, and owner and designer of Wacky Wacko streetwear. In conversation with "WARES!" curator Lauren Karazija, Bogart will discuss his distinctively playful and irreverent practice in the production of art, music, and clothing.
The artist’s work will be featured in the SBMA exhibition "WARES! Extraordinary Ceramics and the Ordinary Home" from June 18th through September 17th.
Writers of all levels are invited to participate in this informal exploration of the Museum’s galleries as an impetus to writing. Monthly sessions are led by a visiting writer who begins with a conversation and prompt, partially inspired by works on view. Participants write on their own, then reconvene to share and comment on each other’s work. Please bring something on which to write.
This special summer session in "The Private Universe of James Castle: Drawings from the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation and James Castle Collection and Archive" is led by local poet and UC Santa Barbara professor Rick Benjamin.
