California Highway Patrol believes a Santa Maria woman died in a vehicle collision on Highway 101 after falling asleep at the wheel.
Jennifer Lopez, 37-years-old, was driving on Highway 101 northbound near Buellton around 1:50 a.m. Saturday when her 2016 Toyota Corolla went off the roadway. Her vehicle was just north of Jonata Park Road in the number two lane traveling approximately 70 mph.
According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, Lopez fell asleep and allowed her vehicle to travel off the wast roadway edge and collide with a construction sign board. The impact woke Lopez who then made a hard turning movement to the west.
Her vehicle traveled back across the roadway and off the west edge where it overturned in the center divider. Lopez was ejected from the vehicle where it came to rest on top of her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP believe alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this collision.
If they ever get driverless cars perfected, this is one life that could have been saved.
HOW do they know she didn’t die due to distracted driving…?
presumably because they did an investigation?
