Where’s the Duck Family?

By an edhat reader

The duck family at Alice Keck Memorial Garden, hatched from eggs last year and appreciated by all who walk in the park, have gone missing as of Sunday 3/10. There were ten of them, and they are suddenly gone.

  1. Mallards are common all year long here and do not migrate from this area. The ones from AK and Canada migrate between there and southeastern CA , Baja, parts of TX and the Gulf Coast states. One can check it all out on Cornell’s All About Birds. These are likely at the Bird Refuge or LLC ( Lake Los Carneros ) and like our local Mute Swan will go from one to the other.

  2. There was a raft of Muscovy ducks at Alice Keck Park Park. My friend reported back to me with photos, so definitely not Mallard ducks. Don’t put it past The City to cull ducks, though. There’s a reason why The Bird Refuge once had loads of ducks (lots of domestic Pekin ducks—the white ones) and then, suddenly, no more ducks at all. And nothing to do with the drought, either.
