There were two owls in my backyard a few nights ago. Can anyone tell me what type of owls these are?

I think it is a Great Horned Owl fledgling.
Yes, it most likely is. I have photographed a number of them through the years and it looks exactly like that.
Not much help – but those are baby owls.
Possibly a Snowy Owl (aka polar owl, white owl, Arctic owl). Native to the Arctic Tundra but, in relatively rare instances, spotted in other regions such as California, likely having flown off course during migration.

A young Great Horned Owl. I have several in my canyon on the Mesa now. They don’t have their “ears” yet. I also have an adult hanging around, so I know they are being taken care of.
would that canyon be, Honda Valley Preserve? If so, then you’re probably correct. We frequent the lowest section of the preserve which butts up against SBCC West Campus. There are 4 large GHO’s down there that we watch hunt. There are 3 more on East campus amoung the eucalyptus trees.
The last time I was at the upper portion of the valley/preserve was last fall and i counted 6 large GHO’s there. I haven’t seen fledglings before, but would guess that’s whats in the photos. Could be a barn owl possibly too?

Yes, my canyon is Honda Valley. I’ve seen three young Great Horned Owls in the last week. They sure are cute and fuzzy!
