What About Street Sweepers?

We’ve been told about not using leafblowers to get rid of street and yard ash residue, but there will soon be a much bigger threat in that regard—city street sweepers. For those of you who haven’t seen these behemoths in action, here’s what happens: the sweepers lumber down the streets with huge swirling brushes churning up everything in their path, creating huge dust clouds. The streets are thick wish ashes right now.

Once the sweepers go into action, they will stir up a huge barrage of toxic elements into the air that will be far worse than just letting the ashes settle. Hopefully, someone from Public Works will figure this out before the sweepers get going tomorrow (Monday). If they don’t, and you see street sweepers on duty, please call public Works and tell them to stop immediately. The ash particulates aren’t as “harmless” as regular street dust. They can actually kill people with acute respiratory conditions.

  1. why shouldn’t it be allowed? those guys are paid to do a job (that none of you would do) and they do it, even in the middle of a fire storm. Life goes on. How about being proactive and getting rid of the ash yourself in your neighborhood. That way, you can do it the way you prefer and don’t have to get online and cry because someone else is doing it their way *gasp*….

  2. The street sweeping program really is a bad joke. It is part of the only local government department that turns a PROFIT each year from the parking fines. This really is the only reason for its existence. It is a very disruptive program forcing the daily game of parking roulette. Just as the Rex states, it really does more of a job of kicking up dust than it does cleaning the streets. Most of the streets in this town don’t have a trash problem and thus have no need for street sweeping. Add up the dust and diesel smoke from the vehicle trips all over town daily, it really does not make sense, except for the revenue stream to the local government.

  3. Please stop the leaf blower comments. People will do whatever they want without your whining. What do you think happens when people drive down the street with those ashes? The Nanny state and helicopter parenting must be stopped.
