It was a great party in May 1918 — until the police showed up. “The appearance of the police sent the guests on a wild scramble to escape, men leaping through windows and dashing through doors, and over the rear fence, the motley throng sped,” according to the local paper that described an unannounced nocturnal visit of the local law enforcement personnel to a house on Pico Street on Santa Barbara’s East Side. My next Way Back When book — 1918 — will be available in local bookstores in November, and at Amazon.com. This will be the fifth book in my series of the history of Santa Barbara, one year at a time.
