By Betsy J. Green

Although ground squirrels were never popular, tree squirrels were considered cute 100 years ago. They were featured in an animal story in “The Sunnyside Club,” the new kids’ section of the local paper. A story called, “The Sunnyside Squirrels” began,

“There is a sunny valley, that is bright with blossoms gay;

And there a merry meadow brook goes singing on its way;

And bunnies from their burrow holes, and squirrels from each tree;

Whisk and frisk and lopty-lope, all so Merrilee.”
