Are you interested in learning more about the ocean? Would you like to get involved in the Santa Barbara community? The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center is seeking volunteers to begin as exhibit interpreters to support our mission to inspire a thirst for discovery and a passion for the natural world.
Volunteering at the Sea Center is a very hands-on experience educating the public about our local marine environment. We are an aquarium/science center and the volunteers start out at the tide pool and shark habitats (assisting the public with touching the wildlife) and at the wet deck which mimics a research vessel. Here the volunteers assist the visitors in collecting water, sand, and plankton samples, testing turbidity and salinity, and exploring the properties of our ocean right under the pier! You will also have the opportunity to attend monthly advanced training, lectures, and field trips.
We ask our volunteers to commit to one 3 hour shift per week for 4 months, equating to 48 hours of service at a minimum. We have volunteers of all ages, but those under the age of 14 must volunteer with a guardian.
