Victim Identified in Fatal Highway 166 Collision

The Sheriff Coroner’s Bureau is identifying the victim from the fatal traffic collision on December 19, 2023, on Highway 166 east of Aliso Canyon Road as 25-year-old Rosa Isela Mendez Santos from Bakersfield.

The California Highway Patrol has confirmed one person died and two others are critically injured in a vehicle collision near New Cuyama on Monday afternoon.

The single-vehicle crash took place when a Chevy Express van drifted off the roadway for unknown reasons while traveling eastbound on Highway 166.

The van hit an embankment and flipped onto its roof in the middle of the road.

The driver, Javier Mendez Santos, 19 of Bakersfield, and passenger, a male from Bakersfield, sustained major injuries. They were transported to Bakersfield Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Another passenger, a 25-year-old female from Bakersfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

California Highway Patrol is investigating this incident.
