United States Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at Vandenberg Air Force Base during a visit on Monday and announced a new U.S. commitment on direct-ascent anti-satellite missile testing.
“It is wonderful to be back in California,” Vice President Harris began her speech to a crowd of 200 Space Force service members who gave her a standing ovation.
She announced the United States commits not to conduct destructive, direct-ascent anti-satellite (ASAT) missile testing, and that the United States seeks to establish this as a new international norm for responsible behavior in space. The Vice President also called on other nations to make similar commitments and to work together in establishing this as a norm, making the case that such efforts benefit all nations.
“Simply put, these tests are dangerous and we will not conduct them,” Vice President Harris said. “And today on the behalf of the United States of America, I call on all nations to join us. Whether a nation is space-faring or not, we believe this will benefit everyone, just as space benefits everyone.”
The United States is the first nation to make such a declaration and is the first initiative under Vice President Harris’ effort to task the National Security Council staff to work with the Department of Defense, the Department of State, and other national security agencies to develop proposals for national security space norms that advance U.S. interests and preserve the security and sustainability of space, according to a press release.
“This commitment addresses one of the most pressing threats to the security and sustainability of space, as demonstrated by Russia’s November 2021 destructive direct ascent ASAT missile test. The People’s Republic of China conducted a similar test in 2007. The destruction of space objects through direct-ascent ASAT missile testing is reckless and irresponsible. The long-lived debris created by these tests now threaten satellites and other space objects that are vital to all nations’ security, economic, and scientific interests, and increases risk to astronauts in space. Overall, these tests jeopardize the long-term sustainability of outer space and imperil the exploration and use of space by all nations,” the press release states.
The Biden-Harris Administration stated this new commitment also protects U.S. interests in space as reducing ASAT testing and debris generation advances U.S. national security interests and protects long-term U.S. interests in space exploration, space science, and space-enabled economic development.
Vice President Harris was also joined by California Senator Alex Padilla and Representative Salud Carbajal in meeting with men and women of the United States Space Force and United States Space Command at Vandenberg Space Force Base.
Padilla spoke at the event, highlighting the critical contributions that Vandenberg has made to the country and California’s rich aerospace ecosystem. Padilla also received a briefing on the work being done at the base to advance national security.
“As we enter this new age of increased space exploration, the United States must continue to lead the way in establishing norms to protect our national security and space assets,” said Senator Padilla.“Thanks to critical installations like Vandenberg Space Force Base, the United States has consistently been a pioneer in satellite imagery and innovation in space. I am committed to continuing my work in the Senate to bolster space diplomacy and ensure that space assets can be used responsibly by all spacefaring nations.”

We live in the US, if we don’t like laws, we can change them, but for my entire life both parties have turned their back on immigration reform because their [corporate] donors like the cheap labor (also, it would require tough decisions, something politicians avoid above all else cuz it’s bad for reelections).
Like her or not she will be probably be resident in the next 3 years as the current office holder is in steep decline.
Voice, I agree with the point that yes no administration has properly been able to come up with sound immigration reform. I, too, feel that it’s because capitalists enjoy the cheap labor and cheap produce picked by cheap labor.
Although it’s inaccurate to say wall construction stopped because of kids in cages. It stopped because private land owners didn’t want to give up their land to the government. It also doesn’t work and walls have never worked so our taxpayer money to build less than 400 miles of an inefficient wall was basically burned on a vanity project to anger simpletons.
I’m so glad she hasn’t tied up traffic all over town like Pence’s wife and daughter did when they wanted to go on a shopping spree downtown.
VOR, The Border wall was halted because that was a campaign promise of Biden – and the majority of voters voted for Biden. Trump’s policy on children at the border wasn’t controversial merely because it resulted in children being held at the border, which is a long-standing reality and is what will happen at this facility. It was controversial because it forced children to be separated from their parents given its hard-line policy requiring that the parents be held and not released into the country (and given that children couldn’t be held with their parents). This, in effect, made for more children (often very young) that needed to be held alone — about 3,000 in total — beyond the unaccompanied minors (who are often older) who arrive. I do agree that business have benefitted from cheap labor and corporate donors.

I am 110% for all of the hard working immigrants that came into the US legally for a more prosperous life. In fact I do not mind letting more immigrants in as long as they become productive contributors to our society vs takers. I would gladly trade out all of the American hating-liberals who just take, take, take and complain about the producers, for the hard working immigrants who bring their culture and love for a country that embraces capitalism. The biggest problem with immigration is not letting them – it is them getting brain washed and vote harvested by lefty progressive liberals who use them as pawns to further their American hating agenda.

Voice is exactly right. Check into reality 4:39. If harris is the nom in 2024, you can assume the presidency as good as lost. She is awful and no one voted for her. They didn’t vote for her in the primaries, and they voted for Joe Biden as president in spite of Harris, not because of her.

Last but not least, when VP Harris ran for President in the primary, she had a core base of about 5%. Most of that from CA voters
She had a good first debate performance and grew her support to 15%. However her support crumbled back to 4- 5% after subsequent debates.
Not only could she not hold her gains over time, she actually may have lost a bit. On a CA primary level, before she quit the race, she was forecast to finish behind Sanders, Biden, Warren, and maybe to edge out Mayor Pete in her home state. Sitting Senator of CA population 40M was forecast to finish dead heat with Mayor of South Bend, Indiana population 102,000
Mayor Pete got 4% of the CA primary vote
Not good news nationally for a CA candidate to not finish #1 in their own state.
Then there is the historical data:
Of the 15 vice presidents who went on to become president, eight succeeded to the office on the death of a president, and four of these were later elected president.

I think that a lot of reasons why so many people think she is “awful” is due to the bad press she has received, plus she is tied directly to the most unfavorable POTUS of all time. Her poll numbers are absolutely in the tank (in the mid 20s), which show how much the press does not like her. She also has had nearly all of her top staff members quit since she took office, and report that she’s a “bully” and blames them for not prepping her prior to interviews. I don’t think she can help with the nervous laughter, but it certainly does not help when a reporter asks her a question and she says something inane, giggles, and appears to not know what day it is or where she be:

Harris: At some point, you know, we are going to the border, We’ve been to the border. So this whole thing about the border. We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border,

She also has to take some of responsibility for how she is perceived.
So many of these comments reek of sexism. She is the VP, not the wife of the VP coming on a shopping trip. Some of you guys need to pull yourselves away from Fox News and understand that women today do a little more than go on shopping sprees or bake goodies or prepare jello molds for church bazaars.
OP of the original question here. I guess I’m not seeing anything stand out that much here. VP’s are notorious for not doing much (anyone watch VEEP on HBO?) or getting much attention. It doesn’t feel a bit like “oh well I just don’t like her” with no real substance. It begs the question, how much of this is about her being a woman, and a woman of color? Pence didn’t get nearly this much critique and he did less.

So true. However, in THIS case, the VP is being “eyeballed” more than ever because no one is expecting the POTUS to make it cognitively through his entire term. If “Chuckles” (as the VP is referred to by her own staff behind her back) has to take over the presidency, let’s all hope and pray that she does a great job. I don’t think there is a person on the planet who wants this to happen. It’s quite obvious that the fumbles, stumbles, gaffs, confusion, repeated lines, lost looks, and missteps are only going to get worse. So, yeah, hang on to your hats good people and hope the laughing VP can step up to the plate.
And the Republican support of Trump and his assorted trumpists are unselfish? Biden won by popular support, the largest number of votes in American history. And considering the mess he inherited (covid, rampant inflation, decline in international relations, et al) he has done a good job.
Misogyny and racism seem to drive the hatred of Ms. Harris. She is not charismatic, and pretty straight forward, which makes her difficult to like, but the hatred is unreal. Much like the stuff thrown at Mrs. Clinton.
She’s a strong, intelligent, educated and successful BROWN skinned woman. Of course the RIGHT hates her. They hate every woman who is not dumb, blonde white skinned and submissive.

The accusation that anyone who doesn’t like Kamala is a racist and a misogynist is a cope and a tactic used to shut down valid criticism of her. I voted for Hillary Clinton (despite supporting Bernie until then) because even though she wasn’t my favorite and I didn’t agree with all of her policies, she was a professional stateswoman and someone I took seriously and I believe she handled herself with the grace and professionalism befitting a president. Kamala is a cackling mess. It isn’t misogyny to insist the leaders of our nation don’t act like flippant school girls, laughing at the gas price crisis and telling Americans to just buy electric cars. The same sentiment could have been delivered in an effective way that captured an understanding of the life of the average American. But Kammie is so out of touch she wasn’t capable of delivering that kind of message. No one likes here except a few strange defenders on this board. It will play out whenever she runs for election – be it 24 or 28. She will lose by a huge margin. And for those who want to believe her only critics come from the right, nice try. As mentioned, I supported Bernie in the last two elections.

There is little to criticize because he doesn’t do anything. He was practically catatonic most of Trump’s presidency, and besides – there was a lot more to focus on with Trump. We were all so busy disliking and keeping tabs on his lunacy that Pence seemed positively boring in comparison. This isn’t apples to apples so it’s an invalid argument to state that some kind of racism or misogyny is driving criticism of Kamala because Mike wasn’t also criticized. They are not the same at all, nor are the Presidents they serve the same. There is far less to make fun of with Biden than Trump leaving more bandwidth for criticism of Kamala.

I don’t disagree with you at all, SBSURFERLIFE. 100% in agreement. But that fact is then often used by defenders (similar tactics based on different maxims or “truths” exist on the right) to deflect any criticism, even valid criticism. The implications here on this sub are that I can have no valid criticisms of Kamala because I am just firing away motivated by racism and misogyny. I believe Hillary Clinton and Obama for example are both examples of how sexism and racism drives people to passionately hate people that they otherwise would be indifferent or even lukewarm to. That’s pretty clear to me. The seething rage with which many on the right hate Obama, when he was kind of a conservative Dem, is all the proof you need. Kamala is another story. Her opportunism is so gross to me. Laboratory Fentanyl in doses FAR beyond anything that you can prescribe is what is killing 95+%. This doctor gave Fentanyl to GRAVELY ILL PATIENTS. I guess you must have led a charmed life. You seem to not know what cancer pain or other serious pain is like. Do you know why this doctor was found NOT GUILTY? Because the jury found him such based on the evidence. He did not “kill” these patients. They killed themselves, as everyone in this country should have a right to, and especially the terminally or gravely ill. Consider yourself blessed that it sounds like thus far you have no idea what this kind of pain and experience is like. You might find yourself one day begging for high dose Fentanyl just to get a break from the suffering. Excuse me, I need to go “soak my liver” some more with some 100 proof alcohol. It’s nearly noon and I haven’t had my obligatory 14 drinks yet so I need to get going.
And yes, meant to include that FENTANYL IS CROSSING OUR BORDERS. Try reading the news sometime. You keep getting it wrong on drug crisis facts and stats. First, there was no way the illegal marijuana industry could be gaining steam after legalization, now there is no way laboratory Fentanyl made in China is crossing our borders.
SBT – you’re clearly unable to see the point. I’ll spell it out again…. a border wall will not stop fentanyl and other opioid overdoses. It might slow them for a few weeks/months until the smugglers find a way around/over/under it, but we have a big problem still here IN our country. This was just an example (granted, not the best though). Countless US docs have been busted over-prescribing prescription drugs. This is a problem we need to address IN our country as well. We can’t just throw up a wall and declare victory. Not saying this is what you’ve proposed, but many here seem to suggest that.

She is not very bright. One of the most critical criteria for Biden’s VP pick was that the person be a woman of color, not the most qualified person available….thats what we got.
@ Oops, Harris attended Howard University, interned as a mailroom clerk for California senator Alan Cranston, chaired the economics society, led the debate team, and graduated with a degree in political science and economics. She then attended law school at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and graduated with a Juris Doctor and was admitted to the California Bar in June 1990.
So… she’s is bright and I’d bet my salary has more advanced education and experience than you do. It’s sad to say, but white men with far less experience and education get jobs like this and no one bats an eye, so maybe look inward a bit.

As some people say, perception is everything. VP Harris is educated and experienced, but…..she often comes across as a person who is not particularly bright. That perception is the driving force behind the bitter vitriol against her. It’s nearly impossible to have lower poll numbers than the current POTUS. VP Harris’ poll numbers are absolutely horrible news for anyone who holds public office, and especially for someone who has higher aspirations. In her case, that is to be the POTUS. It’s really a shame that people do not particularly care for her as a politician. I can live with her so-called inappropriate laughs/giggle and non-answers, but I only have a single vote, and some 80% of the voters in the US do not have any faith in her. Hillary may take another run for it, and same for Bernie (Bernie SHOULD have been the prez in 2016!!!).
Not appearing to be bright doesn’t seem to be the general consensus of Harris. Not getting anything done, having issues with her staff, being elitist … those are more in line with reasons why others might not “like” her but lack of intellect it is not.
