Vehicle Crashes Into Cyclists on Highway 101

By an edhat reader

Around noon on Sunday, a group of cyclists riding southbound on Highway 101 at the Refugio bridge were run over by a car. At least one was sent to the ICU with multiple fractures and injuries. Unbelievable that no local news station or source has picked this up. Is there any more information?

  1. PITMIX – the difference is, “cagers” (way to lose instantly lose credibility on this issue) are meant to use the 101, cyclists are not. It’s not designed for them. Yeah, a bike path would be great, but until there is one, they need to ride with the utmost caution, definitely NOT riding side by side and swerving into the car lanes. It’s one thing to ride like that on Cathedral Oaks, but doing it on the 101 will get you killed and could cause a mass accident killing other innocent motorists.

  2. PStar before you get all weird with the caps try looking where it would be….not SBPD or the two pretty slow if ever reported news sources. CHP reported it along with County Fire. Yes it’s a State Hwy and Santa Barbara County Fire.

  3. Were they in their lane? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to swerve out of my lane to avoid groups of cyclists on that stretch of the 101. There are lots of hills and turns that leave motorists no time (even going the speed limit) to avoid cyclists that are encroaching the lanes. Any group of cyclists riding 2 or more abreast should be cited. Hope they’re all OK, but this is what happens.

  4. SBROBERT – half of urban land is being used for highways? Not sure about that one. Definitely not sure about the 101 being built for cyclists. I think there’s been a few historical pieces on here that would be contrary to that idea.
