Caltrans participated today in a dedication of 21 miles of US Highway 101 in the Gaviota area as a State Scenic Highway. This designation extends from west of the City of Goleta to the interchange with State Route 1 north of the Gaviota Tunnel.
This dedication took place at the Arroyo Hondo Vista Point near southbound US Highway 101 in Gaviota.
This program included remarks by Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins, Santa Barbara County Third District Supervisor Joan Hartmann, Former Third District Santa Barbara County Supervisor Doreen Farr and Steve Forsell, Vice President of the Gaviota Coast Conservancy.
This designation began with the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors supporting this nomination in October of 2016 and has been the intent of the county to seek this designation since its Coastal Land Use Plan was adopted in 1982.
This effort included Caltrans District 5 and its Scenic Highway Coordinators who prepared a Visual Assessment and Corridor Protection Plan. This official designation as a State Scenic Highway was approved in December of 2016.
