United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County is honored to announce we have been awarded a $150,000 challenge grant from The Mericos Foundation to help rebuild Camp Whittier, a 94-acre year-round camp and retreat center nestled among the hills of the Los Padres National Forest just north of Santa Barbara.
The camp was greatly impacted by the Whittier Fire in July 2017, and UBGC has been restoring the buildings lost in the fire, as well as adding additional safety features. The camp provides 60% of the funding that keeps ALL of our clubs open, and allows us to keep our membership fees low. It is because of Camp Whittier that we are able to provide scholarships to any youth whose family is unable to pay the $40 annual membership fee, and ensure that no child is ever turned away.
Michael Baker, CEO for United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County said, “We are incredibly grateful to The Mericos Foundation for their continuous support of Camp Whittier. I have no doubt that the people who have supported UBGC over the years, as well as those that have directly supported Camp Whittier, will help us meet this challenge.”
Every dollar donated to Camp Whittier between now and July 8, 2019 – the second anniversary of the Whittier Fire – will be matched by The Mericos Foundation up to $150,000. There are two ways to give: Donate HERE or mail a check payable to United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County, PO Box 1485, Santa Barbara, CA 93102. Please indicate on your check that your gift is for Camp Whittier.
About Us:
United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC) is a non-profit youth development agency serving children ages 5-18 years, at 10 locations across Santa Barbara County. UBGC is a member of the national organization, Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Our mission is “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens” and we place an emphasis on BGCA’s Formula for Impact making sure our programs help youth achieve three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship and HealthyLifestyles. The Formula for Impact takes youth who need us most and incorporates outcome driven Club experiences to meet our priority outcomes. In 2001, UBGC consolidated as one organization and now serves communities in Carpinteria, Goleta, Westside Santa Barbara, Buellton, Solvang and Lompoc; and manages Camp Whittier, a 94-acre residential camp, in the Santa Ynez Mountains near Lake Cachuma. UBGC oversees a budget of over $4 million raised from individual and corporate contributions, foundations, grants, special events and program service fees.
