Students at UC Santa Barbara joined the global climate strike movement on Friday with a poignant protest outside the school’s library.
At UCSB, the Global Day of Action event was organized by a local chapter of the Sunrise Movement, a global group that began in 2017 to encourage young people to advocate for their own future and make climate change a priority.
Over 1.4 million students skipped school around the world on March 15 to strike for climate action. Demonstrations were held from Australia to India, the United Kingdom to Argentina, and in our hometown. It’s estimated that 2,233 cities in 128 countries held protests.
As demonstrators dressed in black and lied on the ground, the illustrative “die-in” lasted 11 minutes which is symbolic of the estimated 11 years left to curb climate change. The group also remembered those who lost their lives due to climate change-related disasters, specifically those in our own community related to the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow in Montecito.
A group of speakers also discussed their encounters with local and national environmental disasters. Mikala, from Paradise, CA, spoke of her experience being at school in Santa Barbara while the Camp Fire destroyed her hometown without having a way to know if her family survived.
The Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history to date, claiming 85 lives. Scientists state disasters like the Camp Fire will happen again due to climate change, and research backs up their findings, proving that climate change makes California’s wildfires much worse.
“My peers and I know how hard it can be to stay positive about the future of our world. But we know it doesn’t have to be this way and we’re willing to fight for it,” said student and photographer Reena Nanavati.
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors were called upon by protestors to support the Green New Deal, a new legislative proposal aimed to address climate change and economic inequality, and to halt any investments in fossil fuels.
This global movement was prompted by Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish student, who created a solo protest last year advocating for climate change solutions. Three Norwegian lawmakers have nominated Thunberg for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for her environmentalism work.
“We proved that it does matter what you do and that no one is too small to make a difference,” said Thunberg of the strikes.
Both the Thomas and camp fires were started by bad/old electrical lines. Not climate change.
Where is the instagram or facebook page for this demonstration? I’d like to praise their virtue.
April 1, 2015 Jerry Brown:
California’s drought is now “firmly rooted in its fourth consecutive year,” the Department of Water Resources announced in a press release that stated, “Sierra Nevada snowpack is virtually gone.”
“This is the new normal,” Brown said.
New normal indeed! A few months later, in 2016, the sierras had a record for deepest snowpack ever recorded . Did Jerry retract? Of course not. The next year was a normal snowpack and this year is going to be a record or near a record.
Oh, and the Santa Barbara supervisors just declared the drought to be over which means it’s over in the entire state of California.
The government craves power and creating fear helps them achieve their aims. That is why you have “deniers”- they’ve seen these predictions and hysteria time and again.
I would be happy if yhese students were protesting that Miley Cyrus is one of the headliners of ‘Woodstock 50’….Miley Effin Cyrus is going to represent the new counter culture? C’mon you SB ex-hippies, how ’bout steppin up to the plate and prove once again the 60’s was not just one big waste of time…or maybe it was. Miley Cyrus for JFC’s sake!!!
Here is a FACT to ponder during your next lecture at UCSB… The “Green Pied Piper” of California, Jerry Brown, spent 5.4 BILLION DOLLARS on a bullet train to nowhere that was thankfully mothballed before $10 more Billion was spent… That $5.4 Billion would have paid for a lot of College Educations or more valuable, Trade School Educations… Think about that while you hold up your signs!
Try 13 Billion. lol !
I will always remember Miley for her Thrush coated tongue . 🙁
These students need to know that the exact same claims made by the U.N. were made as early as 1989. I will Post a link to an Associated Press article from June 29, 1989 where the exact same consequences were predicted “within 10 years.” Well, that was 30 years ago! So, what gives them confidence in the current dire predictions now? Also, are they aware that the US emissions are going down every year for the last 11 years? And that even if we stopped all
Cars, coal, airplanes in the US, CO2 emissions would still rise? The biggest polluters and growing will be China and India.
But anyway, have a look at that AP article. It’s so similar it looks like a hoax at first. Same exact claims of sea level rise and extreme weather- all made even before Al Gore did his first movie.

Exactly. Find me the scientist who can prove climate change caused a fire, since we’re taking “science” here.
This is from the UN in 1989!:
The most conservative scientific estimate that the Earth’s temperature will rise 1 to 7 degrees in the next 30 years, said Brown.
The difference may seem slight, he said, but the planet is only 9 degrees warmer now than during the 8,000-year Ice Age that ended 10,000 years ago.
Brown said if the warming trend continues, ″the question is will we be able to reverse the process in time? We say that within the next 10 years, given the present loads that the atmosphere has to bear, we have an opportunity to start the stabilizing process.″
He said even the most conservative scientists ″already tell us there’s nothing we can do now to stop a … change″ of about 3 degrees.
″Anything beyond that, and we have to start thinking about the significant rise of the sea levels … we can expect more ferocious storms, hurricanes, wind shear, dust erosion.″
Get back to me when you’ve been in the workforce & paying taxes 10-20 years, then let’s talk about “deals”…
11 years now, they said 12 years about 12 years ago.
Climate change is real!…..It has been happening for billions of years with no human involvement. And guess what? It will keep happening whether humans are involved or not. The fact that people think humans are causing this due to ONE single imput (C02) is laughable.
420722 and others – no one has ever said climate change *caused* the fires. Yes, they were caused by faulty lines or other reasons. What climate change did, if anything, was exacerbate the already started fires and turned them into deadly firestorms. The heat and wind (arguably due to climate change) accelerated the fires and caused them to spread rapidly and become unable to be controlled. It’s a very simple distinction that people keep ignoring, likely by choice to fit their anti-climate change narratives.
6629- I think He/she was being facetious. But wildfires have been a fixture in California since long before manmade CO2 was an issue. As for causation, What was the role of growing population in rural areas? It’s simply unscientific to bring someone down from Paradise and blame the disaster there on climate.
As for the anti-climate change narrative, narrative implies storytelling. So, i ask you, if these very same organizations (UN, environmental scientists) made identical claims in 1989 predicting chaos by 2000 as cited to above, it is they who are spinning yarns and making political hay.
Jerry brown just s few years ago blamed the low Sierra snowpack on climate change and said “this is the new normal” as the basis for further governmental control. 4 months later the Sierra snowpack was the highest ever. This year it’s close to the record.
So, as a person who saw al gore speak in person in 2004 and was on the electric car and solar panel bandwagon since 2003, I’ve become rather skeptical of how smismte science is being used for political power grabbing. Jerry brown never came out and said “hey sorry I got It wrong.” Ditto for Gore.
There have been so many news stories blaming climate change for seemingly everything that is has become almost comical.
I’ll paste the link to the list below.
But to sum it up for my part. I’m against alarmism. I know the planet is warming since the ice age ended (15,000yrs ago the Santa Barbara channel was 300’ shallower and it was only 6miles to cross the channel which is why wooly mammoths were able to cross it. ) and I believe that humans have contributed to it. I also believe the science is flawed and outcome oriented. I know The Paris accord was a farce because I know China was never going to curb its emissions in 10yrs, which means the US “showing leadership)” would’ve done nothing to affect climate and would’ve crippled our economy, not just coal but all sorts of industries.
The green new deal cure is a lot scarier to me than climate change. The problem i have is it’s always 10 years away. When will we see the first climate casualty? We have 70,000 people dying of opioids each year and 50,000 from car accidents. If it were about saving lives clearly we could have an automotive new deal where every state cuts the speed limit to 25 on all roads and highways. If we have an opioid crisis we can have death penalty for drug dealers of any opioid. I’m being hyperbolic of course, but my point is we are getting close to s time where people will be jailed or fined for being “deniers”. That concerns me more than climate change at the moment.
Obviously we are wasting tax dollars and must stop pretending UCSB students are getting an education on our dollar. We don’t pay students to goof off and come out more stupid than when they came in.
Heres the most of all sorts of news articles blaming natural events on climate change and dire predictions as well. This isn’t being sent because I want To undermine all climate science, it’s to demonstrate how the media stokes hysteria rather than presenting the facts in an unbiased manner. The outcome of all of this is anxious college kids skipping classes (but still boarding airliners home for every college break).

Each of these tired old arguments against anthropogenic global warming due to CO2 emissions overwhelming natural feedback loops is thoroughly debunked at http://www.skepticalscience.com
When I was a student at UCSB in the seventies we had “die-ins” on a regular basis. One of my favorites was the climate change die-in. Human activity was supposedly going to bring about an ice age unlike any ever seen. Or something like that. This is what made me so skeptical of the U.N. climate change report and it’s dire predictions of inferno when it came out fifteen years or so later. Let’s fund some truly scientific climate research that eventually gives rise to climate models that actually work and keep working over time. Seems like current climate research is focused on securing funding for more research and providing intimidating factoids that can be harnessed for political leverage.
That’s got to be one of the most paranoid schizophrenic websites on the net. Congratulations on finding such a scientifically sound source. It’s like consulting Krazy Kat for interpersonal relationships.
The indoctrination of children from elementary to college continues… The result is clear thinkers like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC/LOL)!
So glad to see the youth utilizing their first amendment rights and putting up the good fight for what they believe and feel is right. Not yet jaded and cynical like many of the commenters here.
Actually – the greatest increase in carbon dioxide levels have been since 1950. Levels were stayed pretty much the same with a few ebbs and flows in the previous 400,000 years.
Even when the freezing sea wrapped it’s fingers around the mouths of the doomed, they swore to God..
“But the Titanic is unsinkable”!..
Then they died.
Lying on the ground, marching aimlessly up and down the street, waving silly handmade signs, chanting trite slogans, and accomplishing absolutely nothing. Good use of your time, UCSB. Well done.
The higher Co2 has decreasd global life span of humans due to the difference in how o2 / Co2 gas exchange occurs in the Avioli in the Lungs.
You weren’t around for the 60’s, were you?
As the global authority on anti-bullying would say, “Be Best!”
