UC Santa Barbara Arts & Lectures announced their new lineup for their 2018-2019 season, honoring their 60th anniversary, at the Coral Casino on Tuesday.
The stunning oceanfront ballroom was overflowing with donors, sponsors, community supporters, and university representatives, all excited to learn about the number of talented people scheduled to entertain our locals.
After much anticipation, and scores of custom tacos and ceviche creations, the Arts & Lectures staff handed out catalogs to anxious spectators. More than 65 events are on the books with the theme of “BOLD MOVES and BIG IDEAS” that include 16 premieres and debuts, one world premiere, and two new series. Everything from fascinating talks by today’s thought leaders to command performances by the some of the world’s premier dance companies, musicians and performers will be held at venues from UCSB to downtown Santa Barbara and beyond. Per usual, additional events, including performances, films and public lectures, will be announced throughout the season.
Some of the more well-known events will include talks with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, and Arts & Lectures veteran musician Yo-Yo Ma. Actor Jeff Goldblum will perform a jazz ensemble with his band, Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. Musician and activist Joan Baez will perform at the Arlington Theatre for an evening, as well as actor Alan Cumming performing his show, Legal Immigrant.
The season kicks off on Saturday, September 29, with a performance by the legendary Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performing Marsalis’ Spaces featuring Lil Buck and Jared Grimes.
“This year, Arts & Lectures marks 60 years of presenting artists and speakers on stage in Santa Barbara. There is so much to celebrate!” says Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta M. Billeci. “For our 60th Season we’ll see some of our old friends and exciting debuts and premieres, and we’ll also see some familiar faces bringing something unexpected. We are proud to bring the world premiere of the Silkroad Ensemble’s new work Heroes Take Their Stands, which we co-commissioned on behalf of our adventurous audience. We’re also excited about two new series: four intriguing lectures on Mind & Body and four artistic renegades in Hear & Now. And much more! What an incredible honor and delight to bring such programming year after year, and to look back at more than half a century of outstanding events in Santa Barbara.
