A City contractor will begin replacing the video detection system, which detects the presence and movement of vehicles, at the Fairview Avenue and Calle Real intersection tomorrow, Thursday, July 7. Work will take up to four days to complete and will occur between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. During working hours the following lane closures will occur. In each closure, there will remain one lane open in that direction.
- Southbound lane closure on Fairview Avenue between Encina Road and Calle Real
- Northbound lane closure on Fairview Avenue, just south and north of Calle Real
- Westbound lane closure on Calle Real between Encina Lane and Fairview Avenue
Please drive safely and use an alternate route if possible. Thank you for your patience.

The best solution for this intersection would be closing it permanently and turning the space into a pedestrian only area! This intersection should be adorned with some kind of a medal recognizing it as the worst and most inconvenient intersection in the whole county. I generally pretend that it does not exist and drive miles out of my way to go around it. If there is any significant amount of traffic, it’s actually faster to go through los carneros or Patterson than it is to attempt driving through this confounding intersection.
Someone confused by an intersection that simple shouldn’t be driving.
I think it’s just a busy area and with so many people driving around it’s always going to be slow. Don’t expect anything to change. So long as we keep promoting development in SB and Goleta, we’ll be seeing more and more traffic jams, roadwork, and gridlock. You reap what you sow.
The last time they “improved” this intersection, they installed a permanent right turn lane that is empty most of the day. Not hoping for much here.
