Please tell me it wasn’t the bicyclist causing this by running that stop sign as s/he was heading north on State. (I write s/he, but I’ve only ever seen male cyclists blow through that sign. I am really surprised scoflaw cyclists don’t get “cleaned up” more often at State and Constance. Sometimes I see the bicyclists run that stop sign two, three at a time. (And they’re not in any spandex bikey crew, either—-just regular, everyday dumb#%@es.)
Has anyone ever seen a bicyclist stop at ANY stop sign? I haven’t. They all seem to assume that stop signs don’t apply to them.
shorebird is lying as usual. Everyone, even that troll, has seen bicyclists stop at stop signs.
I am a bicyclist who stops at all red lights and stop signs. Sometimes I see other cyclists stopping when they’re supposed to, but this “why should I stop when no one else is?” mentality is becoming more and more rampant. Why should bicyclists stop when drivers blow through stop signs and red lights? It’s bad behavior breeding more and more bad behavior. And for the record: when was the last time you saw anyone driving stop behind the “limit line” and then pull forward at a stop sign? All of my friends drive up to stop signs and stop with their vehicles nearly 1/2 way into the intersection, straddling the limit line. It’s so lame.

In other words, the evidence doesn’t support your claim.
Why are we even talking about bicyclists — other than that this is EdHateBicyclists? The report says “Injury traffic accident at State Street and Constance Street” … no mention of bicycles.
Ah, now I see Roger’s comment, which was scrolled off my page. But in the majority of car/bicycle accidents, the driver is at fault. e.g.,
https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2011/05/20/136462246/when-bikes-and-cars-collide-whos-more-likely-to-be-at-fault
“… found that 44 percent of fatalities from bike-car crashes in 2009 were determined to be the fault of the cyclist, while 56 percent were the fault of a motor vehicle driver …”
“… cyclists were at fault in 49 percent of crashes, while drivers were at fault in 51 percent …”
“… found that motorists were at fault in approximately 83.5 percent of incidents, whereas bicyclists were at fault in only 16.5 percent of incidents…”
“Why should bicyclists stop when drivers blow through stop signs and red lights? ”
Um, because it can be deadly not to. I don’t think that people who blow through a stop sign does it because they saw someone else do it; they do it because they underestimate risk. Personally, while I have sometimes only dabbed my foot on the ground, I have never simply blown through a stop sign, and I’ve never ridden with anyone who did in my 60 years on a bike. I have, however, been doored a couple of times, have had someone make a right turn into an alley right in front of me, resulting in months of physical therapy, and have been intentionally run off the road.
