A three-vehicle accident shut down parts of Highway 101 southbound near Los Carneros on Wednesday afternoon.

At 12:38 p.m., Santa Barbara County responded to the area with California Highway Patrol (CHP) and a ground ambulance. Crews discovered three vehicles had rear-ended each other with major damage as airbags deployed in each vehicle.

Two patients suffered moderate injuries and were transported to Cottage Hospital. The vehicle in the back had caught fire in the engine compartment, which was quickly extinguished by fire crews, said Captain Dave Zaniboni.

Highway 101 was shut down to one southbound lane. CHP is investigating this accident.
