They’re Baaaack: Goats and Sheep Graze at Eling’s Park

Fuzzy four-legged grazers are now at Eling’s Park to once again support the park’s ecosystem.

The flock of 350 Merino sheep and 140 hungry goats provide eco-friendly fire prevention, invasive plant removal, “natural” fertilizer, and promote the return of California native plants.

This is the fourth year in a row that Eling’s Park has utilized sheep services from Cuyama Lamb. Currently they are near the paraglider parking lot on the South Bluffs, but they move every few days.

Visitors are encouraged to say “hi” to the Maremma sheepdog named Sierra when visiting, but to keep a good distance as she’s doing her job.

The goats are currently grazing on the 2.5 acres of hillside around Godric Grove. These hungry herbivores also eat non-native invasive plants and help with fire prevention.

“Jackson” is the Great Pyrenees keeping watch on the flock from Ventura Brush Goats.

The animals are expected to depart on May 3rd, depending on appetites.
