A local swimmer sustained minor injuries to a foot following a suspected shark bite near Padaro Lane on Friday afternoon, according to Coastal View News.
The swimmer, a woman in her 50s, was lap swimming approximately 50 to 60 yards offshore when she states a 6-foot long shark with a dark dorsal fin bumped her and swam away.
Carpinteria firefighters and an ambulance responded to the area around 2:30 p.m. The woman was reportedly treated for two small lacerations on her foot at a local hospital.
Last weekend edhat readers shared photos of sharks swimming off Padaro and Santa Claus Lane. There were also reports of a Coast Guard helicopter informing beachgoers of up to eight sharks in the area.
Signs are now posted on beaches in Carpinteria and Summerland informing swimmers and surfers of the suspected attack.
Was the sign posted at Carp next to the one that says “World’s Safest Beach?”
150-180 feet offshore, after there have been pictures of dorsal fins off Padaro, seems foolhardy. Is there no signage there?
Why weren’t signs already posted with all the verified sightings last week? Doesn’t seem very proactive to wait until someone gets brushed up against…
Hardly worth a couple of thousand dollars for the ambulance ride. Was she texting while swimming?
Great Whites live in the ocean. That is your warning. Coffee is hot – there shouldn’t be warnings on disposable coffee cups.
Dolphin….??…
Mama shark don’t like you kickin’ her baby.
How can you call this an “attack” she wasn’t even bitten. No missing chunks. She got gummed at worst. You do know that Jaws, the movie, was fiction, right?
Dear Edhat, thanks for fixing the headline. Even South Carolina calls a fatal alligator attack an “encounter”. Preserve and protect Carpinteria and it’s free range sharks!
Sheesh 7 downvotes for telling the truth. No wonder this country is a mess.
