The Santa Barbara County Bomb Squad is investigating a suspicious package outside the county courthouse on Figueroa Street.

The Sheriff’s Office made an announcement around 12:30 p.m. Thursday stating the package is near the corner of Santa Barbara and Figueroa Streets.

Pedestrian and vehicle traffic is currently being diverted north at Carrillo and  Santa Barbara Streets and both directions along Figueroa from Anacapa to Garden Streets.

This is a developing story.

  1. I’m calling BS on this one. Homeless people leave bags, boxes and suitcases all over the courthouse grounds. If every random article left in public was flagged as suspicious, the bomb squad would be on constant patrol. The SBSO is in trouble with their shooting incidents, decrepit jail, and general lack of professionalism. So they do the old trick of conjuring up threats to prove their relevance. Just like Sheriff Bill went out right before his last election to nab a panga boat. Deputies can’t do that all the time though, that would take some planning and getting out of their cars.
