Summer Eve

Often the air on our beaches is cool, when just a quarter mile up it’s much hotter – and sometimes bumpy.

That was our greeting Wednesday evening, as a Sundowner was blowing heat out over the ocean while a cool breeze wafted ashore below it. Elings Park still sported a soft splash of yellow near the paraglider launch.

Nearby, many people were cooling off and hopefully social distancing at Hendry’s. Green was giving way to brown at More Mesa. UCSB was so deserted that on the full-size version of this pic we counted only eight people on campus. More people were enjoying the beach and surf at Coal Oil Point.

When will we be welcoming visitors who glimpse the beautiful scenery flying into our lovely town again?

  1. Beach C-19 spike?! I just checked out the new COVID-19 maps & charts on CA.gov and it seems SB County is having a spike in new cases. I went to https://public.tableau.com/profile/ca.open.data and then clicked on the Public Dashboard chart (or link below it). The top graph there is encouraging, showing Positive Cases going down statewide. Then if you click on SB Co. in the left column, you see that our cases have gone from 6 to 24 in three days! Now I’m wondering about those large groups we saw on the beach at Hendry’s. It’s also surprising to me that we have so many cases per capita, compared with the much larger population in Ventura County. Should we be worried, or are these numbers skewed by incomplete or incorrect data?
