An operational test launch of an Air Force Global Strike Command unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 12:49 a.m. PT.
The purpose of the ICBM test launch program is to validate and verify the safety, security, effectiveness, and readiness of the weapon system, according to Air Force Global Strike Command. Col. Bryan Titus, Space Launch Delta 30 vice commander, was the launch decision authority.
“Tonight’s success is due to the hard work and dedication of Guardians and Airmen from across Team Vandenberg whose contributions are vital to our nation’s security,” said Titus. “These test launches demonstrate the readiness of U.S. nuclear forces and provide confidence in the lethality and effectiveness of the nation’s nuclear deterrent.”

A scheduled, operational test launch of an Air Force Global Strike Command unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 12:01 a.m. to 6:01 a.m. Pacific Time from north Vandenberg.
This test is routine and was scheduled years in advance. Consistent with previous test launches, this ICBM test launch will validate and verify the effectiveness, readiness and accuracy of the weapon system.
In accordance with standard procedures, the United States has transmitted a pre-launch notification pursuant to the Hague Code of Conduct, and notified the Russian government in advance, pursuant to New START obligations.
The purpose of the ICBM test launch program is to demonstrate the readiness of U.S. nuclear forces and provide confidence in the lethality and effectiveness of the nation’s nuclear deterrent, according to Air Force Global Strike Command.
So this was scheduled for 12:01 and didn’t launch until 48 minutes after that? Not too reassuring as a deterrent! What happens in the case that such a shot is needed without days of planning?
