On Friday afternoon, SAR Team members responded to the Tangerine Falls area in Montecito for two hikers that had become stuck while climbing the rocks in the area.
Multiple SAR field teams were deployed to the area with ropes and technical equipment to help perform the rescue of the uninjured hikers down from their predicament. With the damage still present from the original 1/9 debris flow, getting to the hikers was difficult with increased hazard to rescuers due to loose and slippery rocks from recent rains. After scaling the rocky cliff, team members reached the subjects, placed the subject into a victim harness, helmet and gloves and performed a rappel pick-off.
Once the subjects were back on the trail, all hikers and teams hiked out to the trailhead under darkness. The subjects were released to their vehicles and SAR teams returned to the station shortly before midnight.
SBCSAR would like to remind the hiking public to stay on the trails during the current times to reduce the risk of injury or getting stuck, lost or injured and also limit the risk of exposure to local first responders. Hikers should always have the essentials (phone, map of the area, water, food, extra clothing, lights, sturdy footwear and clothing for the elements and a basic first aid kit).

Darwin foiled again..
They were smart enough to have their cell phones and weren’t hiking alone. I think they were adventurous and needed help. Search and rescue is wonderful.. and hikers need to take less risk so as not to put others at risk.
Thanks SAR for rescuing these people. Many hiking trails have been closed in San Diego due to so many people who were unprepared, stuck, lost or injured.
I bet you’ve never read “On the Origin of Species”. I have and it’s tedious. Still funny to see people invoke Darwin’s name like they possess some kind of intellect.
Really smart to be out there so late never planning for trouble and then dark sets in. Not the sharpest knives in the drawer.
