State Route 192 clean-up efforts continue following a major mudslide with plans to repair and rebuild the Montecito Creek, Romero Canyon Creek, Toro Canyon and Arroyo Parida Creek bridges moving forward, Caltrans officials have announced.
While the repopulation of Montecito evacuation zones continues, most sections of State Route 192 are now open to motorists but through traffic is strongly advised to continue using US 101. State Route 192 is closed between Sycamore Canyon/Camino Viejo Road and Cravens Lane.
Security Paving Company of Sylmar, California is the contractor for a $20 million project to rebuild the Montecito Creek (Post Mile 8.12), Romero Creek (PM 10.92) and Toro Canyon Bridges (PM 12.49). The Arroyo Parida Creek Bridge (PM 15.50) will also be rebuilt. Caltrans is exploring options and timeline to accelerate its replacement.
These bridges will likely be closed for several months to through traffic, except for emergency and utility vehicles up to the time of demolition. Barricades and locked gates will secure each location with detours available via local roads.
The contractor’s initial work will include demolition of the existing structures followed by construction upon completion of design work for these new bridges. Caltrans will provide a specific timeline for opening State Route 192 at these four locations.
Caltrans will also replace the bridge rails on the San Ysidro Creek (PM 9.6) and Toro Creek (PM 12.14) bridges which remain open under one-way traffic control. These bridges have been reduced to one lane and are controlled by stop/yield signs. Temporary guardrail will ensure safety for everyone. This traffic control plan will remain in place until repairs are complete.
Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway work zones.
