Spirals Gymnastics compulsory team level 2-4 gymnasts started the 2018-19 season with strong placements at Coach Patty’s Out of this World Invitational in Camarillo on September 16th and at the Wonder Girl Cup at Waller’s GymJam in Santa Clarita on September 30th. The competitions included hundreds of gymnasts from teams from all over Southern California.
Megan Palmer led a strong group of level 4 gymnasts winning both a gold medal and a superhero cape and for her all-around performance at the Wonder Girl Cup, in addition to a gold medal on beam, silver medals on both vault and floor exercise and a bronze on bars. She also placed fourth overall in Camarillo.
Isabel Arroyo also topped the awards podium winning the beam title in Camarillo and the floor title in Santa Clarita. In addition, she earned bronze medals for both her vault and all-around scores in Santa Clarita. Lucia Wolf was also on the level 4 medals podium placing second on bars, third on beam and fourth on floor and overall in Santa Clarita. Also competing at level 4 for the first time, Sophia Rollman and Makenna Innocenti both turned in strong performances. The youngest of the level 4 team at eight years old, Innocenti was the most improved of the team increasing her overall score nearly two points between the first and second competition, and earning medals on both vault and balance beam.
Destiny Hernandez posted top-notch scores to lead the level 3 team. She had an excellent performance in Camarillo placing second overall with an impressive 36.525 all-around score, second on floor and on balance beam, third on vault and winning the bars title. In Santa Clarita she brought home several medals including a bronze on floor. Her level 3 teammate, Taite Jimerson, was delighted to be competing in all events again in Santa Clarita after recovering from an injury and posted solid routines on all four events.
Coach Janine Wilson attributes the accomplishments of the gymnasts to the hard work that they put into their practices. She said, “Coach Dante and I are really proud of how far the girls have come. They’ve been working really hard and that’s why they’ve been able to improve so much.”
The youngest team members, Katie Arroyo, Cailyn Beaudette, Matilda Esponda, Lulu Janssen, Alissa Nesterenko, Lilly Pasternack, Jasmine Rollman, Ellyana Salcedo, Julia Van DeVeire and Capri Weaver all had strong showings at their very first level 2 competitions. Level 2 Coach Emily Baker said, “I think the girls did great! It’s their very first competition season so they are still learning about how competitions work, but they are doing a great job performing under pressure while still having fun. As a team they are supportive of one another and support the other teams as well. Gymnastics requires equal parts grit and grace and I’m confident that our gymnasts are well on their way to a successful season.”
The compulsory team is looking forward to continuing their success at upcoming competitions in San Louis Obispo, Corona and at the Level 2 State Championship in Signal Hill, the Level 3-5 State Championship in San Diego and at the Spirals Beach Classic Invitational at UCSB in January. The level 6-10 competition team will begin their competitive season at the Spirals Invitational.
