Was there just a sonic boom or earthquake at about 12:36pm? I’m in the Noleta area, and felt a sizable, momentary shake of the house that got me (on my crutches), jumping out the front door.
I thought I might have felt something a couple of hours ago, also momentary, but not as powerful.
4 distinct “boom” sounds were heard, unsure of the source.
Yeah right after I saw the ufo in montecito.
I’m on the Westside of Santa Barbara, and there’s been some really HUGE firecrackers set off lately…. So loud they sound like sonic booms !!!
Yes.
Puhleeeze, it’s Carpinteria. They always hear stuff……just from breathing that wonderful smelling air! 😉 They’re too busy gossiping with their nosy neighbors.
Launch from Vandenberg around this time.
There were no launches scheduled from Vandenberg today.
You’re right, I saw a post on SpaceX’s twitter page. They had a Falcon9 launch at exactly the same time but in Florida.
I definitely heard it right after my dog started barking like crazy. I was inside and my wife was outside and said she heard nothing. Weird!
One big jolt on N Hope Ave
Heard both events on Cannon Green Drive in Goleta. Sometimes that earthquake fault off Isla Vista makes a big banging noise like that but the USGS shows nothing for today.
Yes, I’m on the westside and my whole house shook and windows rattled. Must’ve been a sonic boom (and not construction) since we are so far apart.
I heard 2 on the Mesa near SBCC. Was wondering what the heck it was.
SST test flights out of Edwards flying over cities to gauge public reaction a while back, right? Maybe that’s still going on, or restarted with a modified or new design? Will be great if NY-UK flight time is cut in half, tho maybe only for the rich?
Good point, anon. I’ve seen only a few references to effects at the ~100k’ altitudes some proposed designs target for cruise flight. Hydrogen and other rocket fuels have been mentioned, each with it’s own environmental factors to consider. There’s lots of info (much of it already outdated) on a wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supersonic_transport
Why would it “be great” to make faster flights to UK when the cost of such is more pollution and atmospheric (especially to the ozone layer) damage per flight? Just so the rich can go somewhere a few hours faster than the rest of us? Public benefit research would work to make airlines more environmentally compatible, not just faster.
There was a similar event yesterday afternoon, at least in our neighborhood.Felt and sounded like a heavy object falling to the ground.
Exactly what it sounded like from our house!
Rattled window for several seconds next to UCSB.
Having worked at Edwards AFB for several years and subjected to daily sonic booms, what struck me about the rumbling sounds I heard yesterday and twice today was was the length of time the sound seemed to linger, more like a rocket than a sonic boom… my best guess is maybe a sonic boom over the ocean and then the sound echoing off our Santa Ynez Mountains. I called a friend at Edwards, who said ‘what sonic boom’ which would be a standard response from someone out there because they are so common. But he also said no SST testing happening currently at NASA Armstrong or Plant 42, not that he’s all-knowing.
Shaped boom and other new commercial SST concepts are in development, and at ground level it’s said to be a long thud more like a passing dump truck than the sonic booms we used to hear in the last millennium. Wasn’t there SST testing happening out of Mojave airport?
Interesting detail I overlooked in reading about the new SSTs.
I don’t have any contacts at Mojave Airport, but I called the airport and they said Boom Supersonic is planning on flying their SST type demonstrator, the XB-1, later this year from the airport; it is not flying supersonic currently.
I’m glad to find this discussion. It jolted 2 doors, but not the light stuff, like my table and lamp. Very odd. I always wait for it to turn into an earthquake, glad it didn’t. I didn’t hear anything, I’m off Hope too.
This rumble had two threads on NextDoor also, with no answers. Nor did any news outlet pick it up. I have a strange observation that makes it more mysterious. I often feel some sort of energy wave before earthquakes, even at a distance. I’ve read animals pick up on this also. In this case, I felt nothing before, but after I was hit by several waves, to the point that I felt dizzy. What would release that?
I felt this from my office down in ventura too!
I have heard that they are using Santa Maria airport for jet pilot training.
Fast jet flew out of Hueneme base in the morning.
It was probably the same one coming back
More Mesa Area. Felt like a truck backed into the house – Bam, Bam. Checked USGS earthquakes at 12:39pm and saw nothing. The pot rack was not swinging in the kitchen so I assumed it was a sonic boom.
I’ve seen a whole lot of contrails this week. Maybe related?
Maybe, but I think it might just be all the moisture in the air. When there’s lots of moisture aloft contrails hang around longer.
