Two car collision, a Smart Car vs a Ford SUV, after 1:00 pm on Tuesday at De La Vina and Ortega Streets. There was one minor injury, a sore neck.
The Smart car got bounced up on the sidewalk and the Ford needed to be towed.
De La Vina was closed from about 1:20 to 2:00 pm.
They are crazy dangerous beyond 50mph. Safe for city streets but you can look up crash results for them. They have no collapsable space front rear or side so once you get up to highway speed you are basically in a steel cage that is designed to bounce off barriers. Coupled with their lame fuel efficiency per payload and you have what amounts to be a trendy golf cart that got some decent initial marketing. A mini cooper s is safer and gets better milage per payload.
Collapsable space is the answer. Notice the “smart car” was flung into the sidewalk like a hockey puck. The Ford did its job by absorbing the impact. I am guessing the sore neck is from the smart car and is going to be major whiplash tomorrow morning. The Ford driver may have a little bruising from the airbag and seatbelt.
Good for you! How do you deal with a third person or what if you need to tow something? My guess is you don’t need those things. Its a gimmick and its resale value is reflective of that. Its like someone said a prius is just not green enough so lets hate ourselves even more and cram into a tiny box that has no meaningful protection and provides no real added fuel economy compared to other comparably priced autos. If you really want to go green get an actual golf cart. You won’t be tempted to hop on the highway and your in town fuel economy will be ∞. Come to think of it the 4 seater golf carts have more space for people and heck it never rains here anyway. But I know that does not look super hip.
No, I can’t fit in because I am taller than 6’1. But let me make this clear enough for you to read: If you are traveling at 70 mph in a smart car and you collide with a fixed object you will very likely be dead after the collision. They test fine at in town speeds because the amount of force required at 45mph does not require collapsable space, you can make a steel cage that will protect the driver from the impact at 45. The issue comes in at speeds over 50 when you need more collapsable space to protect said driver. The space allows for energy to dissipate over time. I can’t teach physic in the comment section. You obviously have the means to have afforded the classes that would have given you this knowledge if you own such a great “luxury economy” vehicle. I am sure you can zip on the freeway with great agility and ease. Does not mean that its a safe move.
Every neighborhood has become victim to this. Last year we had 2 traffic officers for our entire city. Like basically 1 at a time at any given hour. With Murillo as mayor we should not expect more police funding when there are more pressing issues like homeless needs…
I give all Smart Car drivers their due. They are willing to drive fuel efficient vehicles that might not protect them in accidents with big hulking SUVs. Same with bike riders. You know how distracted many drivers are these days, you really are risking your health when you do this.
Your extra vehicle took thousands of gallons of fuel to create. DUH. Be safe maybe get a helmet.
What side of the smart car was hit Einstein?
Great. I want to be in the car that gets bounced onto the sidewalk. You are right that sounds like a ton of fun. I also want to be the guy that pulls infront of a small suv and be at fault. you win. i am dumb sorry
