Small Brush Fire Threatened Homes in Buellton

By the edhat staff

Firefighters ordered evacuations of a Buellton neighborhood for a brush fire on Saturday afternoon.

At 12:39 p.m., County firefighters responded to the 5000 block of Hapgood and Highway 246 in Buellton, heading towards Lompoc.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office was called in to evacuate several residences on Hapgood Road as crews attacked the one acre fire growing at a moderate rate of spread.

With the potential to reach 10 acres near homes, air resources were called in to assist and initally made progress on containing 10% of the blaze.

Another fire, the Plant Fire, near New Cuyama in Northern Santa Barbara County sparked and started to gain steam causing some resources to divert away from Hapgood.

Just after 2:00 p.m., the County Fire Department announced the forward progress was stopped with a bulldozer line around the fire at 50% containment.

Resources will remain on the scene for containment and mop-up.

The cause is under investigation.
