Detain him all you want you will get no reimbursement or redress. If it were me I’d sue the city for the damage. Even if I couldn’t win or the complaint got bounced, at least they’d have to pay one of their employees to sit through a small claims lawsuit – maybe if everyone did that we’d get some action on this ever growing menace.
SBPD should do something about pedestrians disrupting traffic in that area. Specifically, I’m referring to the fact that peds don’t follow the law regarding flashing hand signals at crosswalks, which means DO NOT ENTER the intersection. Traffic is constantly backed up on Carillo at Chapala waiting for peds who continue to stream into the intersection when they are not supposed to, sometimes allowing only 1 car to make a right turn before the light turns red. SBPD could also make a ton of money ticketing red light runners at AND of the freeway offramps in town, but I digress…
When I was about 6 years old me and this other kid went head on running with the old school 1950’s grocery carts in a grocery store, he lost some teeth…
Only if they have comprehensive coverage, and only then after paying the deductible out of pocket. Then expect your rates to go up for making a claim. Total lose-lose for the car driver.
@5:00pm, you may be on to something. How about a class action suit against the City of SB, at the very least for negligence. They are aware of many, many people who feel physically threatened by some of the belligerent homeless (which is the legal definition of assault, by the way). They are aware of the problem, and yet, they continue to do nothing about it and in fact enable it in many ways. Something to consider.
No – we should pay to have flexible rubber baby buggy bumpers put on shopping carts so damage can be minimized.
Only a fool sues itself.

THERREALBEBE: How about we have the State of California electrify shopping carts, so that they recognize homeless individuals and prevent them from even touching the carts? We could zap those transients into dust, like the bug zappers at Foster’s Freeze. That will teach people not to become homeless!
They are listed chronologically. The responses to a comment are under the comment to which they are responding, which makes it appear they are out of chronological order.
Roger, here’s a question I have been perplexed by for years: Why do the police impound vehicles of people struggling to make ends meet? I have watched people loose jobs in a day and become homeless within the next couple of months over this, time and again. The independent impound yards that contract with the city charge hundreds of dollars a day to release the vehicle. Since it cannot be released without registration, the person who just spent their last dollar on food and rent for their family cannot scrape up another $500 or $600 to bail out the work truck, the families’ only vehicle. The bill get’s higher by the day and by the end of the week the family has to give up. How does the breadwinner find another job without transportation? How to they get to their construction or landscaping job in the heart of Montecito,. On a bicycle, with all of the tools of their trade? I think not. This policy encourages and mandates homelessness like no other.
The problem is that they are listed from newest to oldest even when responding to someone comment, which makes it confusing when there are multiple responses to one comment.
Taking shopping carts is theft. The “broken window” idea is, if you let the broken window go unattended, then more stuff happens, trash, break-ins, graffiti, vandalism. Turning a blind eye to small crimes, such as shopping cart thefts, gives the impression of passive people/passive law enforcement. This is a message to criminals and drug abusers. EASY MARK.
If you’ve ever lived around a drug addict, you know that they change you. You become the person YOU don’t want to be. Or, you get used, and run over. That’s how they work it. Using people, using towns. At some point, you have to stand up and say, no more, not another thing will I put up with. It’s awful. I wish drug addicts would just stop. If they won’t, then it’s our job to put obstacles in their paths. Think of a two year old who keeps putting his/her finger in the light socket.
If you get permission from store managers you can take shopping carts that is what I usually do..
Foolish store managers should not be giving that permission, otherwise they have to give it to all.
You know that inclined drive up into Vons parking lot just off of Coast Village Rd? Many years ago I was parked on the incline and about to unload my groceries into my car. Suddenly, an empty shopping cart came rolling past me and was headed straight out onto Coast Village Rd. traffic. I quick ran after the cart and managed to snatch it up just before it pitched itself into an oncoming vehicle. As I did so, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. Yep. My own cart had rolled a bit, just enough to take a chip of paint out of the side of my car.
You have to take the carts back after you use them when they give you permission it’s a real help to someone who can hardly walk and I’m grateful for it. Obviously some of you don’t know what pain is yet.
Being 200 lbs over weight is really hard on the joints.
So is doing a back flip and landing on top of your head in a rain storm during a flash flood when your ash hole boss is testing you. Alot of people end up paralyzed others get snapped necks, broken bones and nerve damage like myself I was thinner then under 200 pounds. I wish I would have taught my boss a lesson then instead of his drinking and driving on the freeway on so he could have felt the full impact I did. I am big now it’s not as hard on the joints as injuries, aging, arthritis or judgemental jerks you might know about the last one…I always found it hard to roll joints.
