The Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau is investigating the in-home death of an offender who was on electronic monitoring. At approximately 7:31 a.m. on September 23, 2021, Sheriff’s deputies responded with fire and medics to a residence in the 100-block of El Sueno Road for a patient in cardiac arrest. While help was on the way, Emergency Medial dispatchers ascertained from the reporting person that the patient was obviously deceased. When first responders arrived on scene, they confirmed the death at 7:37 a.m.
The decedent has been identified as 40-year-old Nathaniel Montross of Santa Barbara. Montross was arrested by the Santa Barbara Police Department on April 19, 2021, for burglary (felony), identity theft (felony), possession of stolen property (misdemeanor), as well as 2 separate warrants for violations of probation. Montross was sentenced on June 3, 2021, to 1 year in custody and an additional 2 years of mandatory supervision. On June 9, 2021, Montross was placed on electronic monitoring and began serving his sentence at home.
This death does not appear suspicious in nature, but Coroner’s detectives are conducting a death investigation. We do not expect to have a finalized cause and manner of death for 6-8 weeks, pending toxicology results.
Inmates wishing to serve their sentences on electronic monitoring must apply for it and be approved by the Sheriff’s Office Alternative Sentencing Bureau. Inmates who participate in the electronic monitoring program are still considered to be in the custody of the Sheriff.
