The off-duty Sheriff’s Lieutenant who crashed his vehicle over the side of Old San Marcos Road on Monday evening is stating the vehicle hydroplaned while trying to turn from San Marcos Road onto San Jose Road, reports KEYT.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating this incident.

A vehicle crashed over the side of Old San Marcos Road on Monday evening, at the entrance to the Trout Club.
A Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s employee, possibly a Lieutenant, was driving in an unmarked patrol vehicle when it went off the roadway at the Trout Club entrance, rolling over a couple times before coming to a stop down the hill.
He climbed out of the vehicle and crawled up back to the roadway. He was alright thankfully.
Last night was rainy and roads can be slippery. Who knows what caused it.. human error or maybe something wrong with his car or just a slick road and going too fast. Accidents happen for a confluence of reasons. As a taxpayer I don’t think we need to ridicule what happened here even if it was human error. So glad he walked away OK.
What a joke. Desk duty for life, what a stupidly unnecessary cost to taxpayers.

“Anon” – If you were there to see what happened, to you call it in? Were you able to provide your knowledge to the investigators?
As a taxpayer (who pays a LOT), I’m very happy my taxes went to rescue a valuable member of our society. This is EXACTLY what I pay them for.

Lt. is saying he hydroplaned. It was raining and it is a dangerous road. With that said, if he is found to be at fault for the collision, will the public know about it and will he be held accountable for damaging a public vehicle?
Why does the public need to know? Our emergency services rescue people regardless of fault.
Seriously folks, what DO approve of spending tax dollars on? I keep asking, but no one will answer, just complain more about people needing to be rescued during emergencies….
I’m sorry but if this person was driving on OSM ,then it really is his fault. There really is no spot to go fast enough to hydroplane. Maybe towards the bottom butt dang, my friend when we were kids in the 70’s riding our Schwinn sting-rays, got thrown off one of those corners because of inertia and wound up with a branch of Coyote bush thru his forearm.
I call BS on Hydroplaning.
Hyrdroplaning against a 7&1/2 percent grade at less than the posted 25mph with no flow restriction along a berm in only moderate rain, if it were even possible it appears the Lt. failed the C.C. of P.D. Standards section 19.01.24, recognizing hazards and appropriate actions to prevent collisions.
Isn’t it S.O.P. to rest the B.A.C. of a driver of a single vehicle crash? Especially one that damages taxpayer property.
