Two semi-trucks collided on Highway 101 northbound near Buellton early Wednesday, closing down a section of the roadway.

At 5:37 a.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to Highway 101 northbound just south of Santa Rosa Road in the “3 Bridges” area. Crews found two tractor-trailers had collided and blocked the northbound lanes.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports one driver drifted out of the lane for unknown reasons causing the vehicle to sideswipe a guardrail and become disabled in the number two lane of Highway 101 northbound. The second semi-truck was directly behind the first and slowed to move around the collision but was unable to avoid it and collided into the rear of the first vehicle.

There were no injuries or other vehicles involved.

Both lanes of Highway 101 northbound were closed causing heavy traffic in the area. The number 1 lane was re-opened at 1:20 p.m. and the number two lane will remain closed for an unknown duration of time while Caltrans repairs the guardrail.
