The last time I flew in an airliner was many years ago, 1980 to be exact. It was a DC-10 from Chicago to San Diego. I had joined the Navy and was headed to boot camp about 45 minutes out of San Diego. We experienced severe turbulence it was pretty scary though I was drunk so not totally freaking out. It was like driving down a bumpy dirt road. We landed OK and made it to the base, I never really thought much about it. I had flown before and not experienced turbulence as severe, maybe a little. I have never flown again though, I wasn’t afraid and planned to do so a couple times after though never got around to it.
Now after watching air plane crashes on You Tube don’t think I will. I always had that feeling. I think a lot of people get when they are on a plane before it takes off that “This is it it’s going to crash,” Once it takes off and your up in the air everything is OK, watching the simulations of impending air disasters has me wondering how many times an airliner is in the air, are there problems with the plane that could potentially crash it if the problem is not solved? At the same time I’m surprised more planes don’t crash with all the things that do go wrong on planes. I don’t want to make anyone nervous but I’m curious. I was watching one of the disasters, the pilot suffered from severe depression and intentionally crashed a plane into a mountain. No I really don’t want to fly anymore I’ll take a greyhound any day only takes a few days to get across the country vs a few hours on an airliner if it makes it. Of course a Bus could crash too though I have ridden a Greyhound hundreds of times never been in a Grey Hound Bus Crash. There’s always the train the only train I ever rode was in Chicago when I got tired of waiting to be transported to Great Lakes after joining the Navy. I took the train back to Hammond for a beer woke up in Porter County Jail 4 days later, that was how I ended up taking a plane to San Diego. Maybe I’ll just hitchhike.
