By Roger the Scanner Guy
I was staying with a friend who lived on West Micheltorena off and on while working for a guy who owned a hair salon at State and Mission. I had been sleeping in his shop but he tired of me being a drunkin bum. I had a lot of jobs back then because I had to hustle to pay for my bad habits of which there were many and rent wasn’t one of them. I would get tired of the drinking and raising hell once in a while and move in with my friend Mavis and rest. Mavis was a woman who had worked in the California prison system as a counselor for much of her life, when she was 50 she suffered a brain hemorrhage and ended up disabled, she was diabetic and becoming blind when I met her. I had been dating her neighbor, Mavis did not like the way her neighbor treated me so we became friends. Mavis charged me 25.00 Dollars a week for a place to sleep, I bought grub and I took Mavis grocery shopping, she could cook and I loved to eat especially real Southern Fried Chicken. After a while of eating good I took a break from Booze and decided to try and get my own place.
I was reading the News Press classified when I saw a place on South Milpas for 450.00 a month. I called the number and spoke to a man named Walter he told me where the place was and if I was interested come on over and fill out an application. I drove over in my old Olds Ninety Eight parked out front and walked up the driveway. I was the first one here, he told me more were coming, by the time I filled out my application there were 40 people in the place. I thought I had little chance of getting the place. The very next day he called me and said it was mine, I moved in that very day. 20 years ago today May the 18th 1998. He gave me 2 Weeks free because he said the other guy did not give much notice having had a family emergency and already paid through the end of May but I insisted on paying. I had the money and it wasn’t the former tenants fault he had an emergency. My friend Brad helped me move in, I had a bed and a bookcase I got for 30.00 Dollars at a yard sale. Brad and I had one brain cell between us when it came to putting things together the bed frame collapsed so I tossed out the frame and put the mattress on the floor.
For entertainment I had a police scanner, one of my bosses bought me can’t remember where. I got a TV but got one of those too. After Brad helped me move in We had some burgers and I started drinking so he stayed over night. I could not drive him home he was on the floor sleeping soundly when I went to use the bathroom. When I went to get up off my throne I put my hand on the sink to steady myself, put a little weight on it the sink gave way the pipe broke and water sprayed out all over Brad. We were like the 3 Stooges me and Brad he was a genius and I was a Drunk I did not even know how to turn the water off. After I figured it out we got some coffee from Circle K and were smoking cigarettes when some idiot started banging the wall outside my place and yelling Good Morning! It was too Early for that crap So I opened the Door and yelled “Good Morning my Shot Gun up your rump!!!” The guy got really scared he was moving a BBQ and slamming it into my wall he got it together and got out of there fast. I did not have a shotgun but the jerk was annoying. I kept to myself most of the time and the neighbors stayed away. I was still working at the Hair salon and surrounding businesses I had alittle auto detailing thing going on also. I had several jobs at the time: Auto detailing, janitor, painting, gardening, security, building maintenance besides the janitorial and auto detailing I had no idea what the hell I was doing. Not to long after I moved in I fell off a ladder and became disabled. I could hardly move after that so I became a drunk full time. That was when I started talking to the neighbors they were drunks too. The neighbors next door were an old elderly couple Isabelle and Jerry she had been in the Air Force for 20 years then worked in store management until retiring, her Husband Jerry was a bit actor in some westerns including the Alamo with John Wayne, he was also a writer, having had written short stories when he was younger. They had a Son who was kind of an idiot he liked to order others around and could become abusive when he did not get his way. Jerry Sr. was bed ridden having had strokes and his wife Isabelle took care of him along with a Care giver though he could not communicate well Jerry and Isabelle were head over heels in love still in their 90’s.
Every once in a while their Sunny Boy came to visit, once he moved in and tried to take over our serene little community. I’ll never forget it because he was ordering everyone around people were complaining to Walter. One morning Walter showed up they were in front of my door and Walter was telling Junior he had to go. Junior did not know I was here, I had alittle peep hole out my door and I was watching as Walter told Junior he had to leave. The Baby Huey went off on MY landlord telling him how things were going to be. He was towering over my landlord sticking his finger at him bullying him. I was getting really angry watching the exchange and just about the time my landlord looked defeated I opened the door and said “Good Morning!” Junior Jumped “Excuse me but I thought I heard Walter say for you to get your shit and get out so get your shit and leave no one talks to MY LAND LORD that way pack your CRAP and get out.” He did really quick….My land lord was so shocked he had no idea I was in my little place. I loved my Walter he reminded me of my Poppy, my Grandfather, and I had treated my Grandfather with disrespect like this punk was treating Walter when I was younger it was kind of my way of giving back. It wasn’t too long after that me and Belinda started hanging out. We were drinkers me and Belinda, Isabelle loved us I think everyone else was scared of us when we got our beer we always bought Isabelle one too she just wanted a 12 ouncer but we always got her a 24 ouncer, we had some wonderful times together. Isabelle was from New Mexico originally and she was one HELL of a cook 2 things I loved Booze and FOOD, but FOOD more! Isabelle made tamales every year at Christmas and a huge Turkey dinner for us then in the middle of the Summer on a hot day when you least expected it another Turkey Dinner. Every week she made a dish she called Mexican Spaghetti which was spaghetti with ground beef, garlic, and piled high with chilis she knew just the right amount to use it was Scrumptious. Isabelle grew her own chilis behind her home I used to tell Magruder the chilis were candy and he’d eat them raw jet the funniest look on his face when the heat hit him. We had some great times here Jerry Sr passed away in 2003 on my birthday, Isabelle followed him in 2006 though she no longer lived here. Belinda moved in here in 2008 after losing her Mother but she pretty much lived here all the time as we were pretty much inseparable from the time we started hanging out in 1999.
I had 2 cats Angel Baby and Pooh Bear which became her kitties too we were so happy together. I had quit drinking in 2003 and Belinda continued to drink but I was happy so happy to have her as my friend I cooked everynight boneless chicken with chilis and onions then one night Angel Baby disappeared, a neighbor who did not like me paid someone to kill my Angel Baby murder is not legal for animal abusers so we had to rely on Karma which did not disappoint us but is never enough. Like all good lives things slowly came to a close, Walter Hurd the best Landlord in the History of the World passed away in 2013, my Sweet Belinda followed him in 2014, Pooh Bear our 3 Legged kitty followed in 2015. We had Jo Bear aka Joey Canoli who lives with me now everyone else is pretty much gone from the Day. Gentleman Jim is still here, we did not always hang out but we been neighbors 20 years and he has been here pretty close to 50 years he used to help me take Belinda in her home and put her to bed when her time was short. True happiness is when you find a good comfortable place with good friends to lay your head….My time here on South Milpas with Belinda, Jim, Isabelle, Jerry, with Walter as our land lord was like Heaven on Earth I will never forget it as long as I live this place and this time in my life I cherish it above all else and I will miss it….I hope I can find a nice place to lay my head and cuddle up with my Joey Canoli…..My Heaven on Earth 200 South Milpas.

Most of have such memories. Some memories are always better ones than others. There are MANY people I have known who are now gone that I miss terribly. There are a few that are still around, but way too far for me to be able to visit. I also miss many of the way things were when I was younger. Thank you for sharing some of your memories with us of your past twenty years.
Hopefully, this will turn into a “blessing in disguise” and you’ll find a new happy place, Roger!
