It was 45 years ago this month the first time I ran away from home. I was 14 Years old unwanted at home and unable to be what my family wanted me to be so I decided to Hitch Hike up to Eagle River, Wis. where we spent our Summer vacations and make a life for myself there. I took nothing but myself had no money, nothing. I walked over to the Borman Expressway off Calumet Ave in Hammond and started thumbing it, totally illegal at the time, but there were no cops around. Once I got to the end of the on ramp into the emergency lane a vehicle pulled over it was a 1967 red Buick Wildcat with red leather interior in near perfect condition the driver was alone an older man who resembled my grandfather. I trusted him judging by the look of an older man though at the time I had no real knowledge of life nor what people could be capable of I was very naive. Within moments of getting in the vehicle I realized I made a mistake because the old man grabbed my leg right away and tried to pull me close to him as he was driving, he was very strong I still remember the pain I felt as he squeezed my leg. I resisted immediately and moved closer to the door I asked the man to pull over and let me out. He laughed and said “If you want out, get out I’m not pulling over.” At that point we were in the fast lane. I looked at the speedometer the vehicle was going about 85 miles per hour the lane next to us was clear but there was am 18-wheeler about two vehicle lanes back that would not be able to stop and I’d be ground in its wheels. I actually considered it, I thought no one wanted me what the hell? I asked him again to pull over and let me out he said “No, and if you don’t do what I want you to do you will never see your family again.” I said ” My father is dead.” ….He added, “You will be seeing him real soon.” I could not believe the guy was going to kill me though he said it there was no way I was going to have sex with this guy though I had already been raped in military school the only sex I had in my young life was rape. I was so scared I had felt as if I missed the only chance I had to get away by killing myself. This guy was not only going to kill me he was going to rape me too.

He got off the highway and started traveling on back roads I knew some of the area and was waiting for a chance of possible escape and I kept asking over and over again for him to let me go. All these years later my door creaking behind me makes me jump while writing this. He continued to refuse to let me go he had a smug look on his face as if my life was already decided and he knew how it would all play out. I started to pray because there was nothing else, that is the time when everyone starts to pray when there is nothing else. He drove the back roads for a long time it seemed finally I thought that the only possible way to escape would be around more people so I told him if he took me to a motel I would do whatever he wanted me to do…It was just outside Lansing, Illinois a one story red brick building with no noticeable sign but obviously a motel he pulled into a parking space turned and said to me. “If you try and run away I will call the police and tell them you are my emotionally disturbed Grandson.” Up until that time I had planned on running I knew what emotionally disturbed meant as my mother told me I was emotionally disturbed. I knew the police would listen to him as No One listened to kids, especially not Emotionally disturbed kids I was on my own. I stood by the car and waited for him to pay for the room, the manager was a big fat white man with flies buzzing around his head he did not even look my way…..”Please God help me” I remember thinking in my head as we walked to the door I looked down and there was a small stack of loose bricks. We entered the room he shut the door behind me took off his clothing and hopped into bed. I remember thinking this was the end of my life murdered and raped in a motel room most likely dumped elsewhere. When I was 10 years old a kid from a couple neighborhoods over was kidnapped his body found 10 days later face down on the beach off Lake Shore Drive naked and strangled that would be me too.

The man ordered me into bed next to him I said “I have to go to the bathroom.” I did not wait for permission I went in and as I did he said “There’s no bathroom window.” He knew, he had been here before most likely with another victim. I was so scared the last moments of my life I continued praying as I turned to leave the bathroom I noticed the shower, it had two glass sides I saw it as I entered the bathroom but paid no attention then as I had other plans to escape out the window though that was impossible as there was only a metal fan in the wall, no window. I remembered the stack of bricks then the answer came to me my last and only chance of escape. I told the man that I would not go to bed with him unless he took a shower that I would not go to bed with someone who was dirty. He got up and went right into the shower as he was in there he told me to take off my clothing and join him. I had another plan I opened the door grabbed a brick stood there for a second hopping that my plan would work, the shower was right there in the corner of the open door I whispered “Please God” and I heaved that brick toward the shower as hard as I could……..I heard the glass shatter, the man yelling, ripping, and a loud thud then nothing for a moment. I could see part of his foot sticking out it was shaking then I heard what sounded like growling. I was scared I thought he was going to jump up and get me but he was still down as except for the shaking his foot had not moved. I thought people would hear the glass breaking and come running but no one did…I grabbed the mans pants took his wallet and keys and put them in my pocket, I tossed his pants under his car…I went back into the motel the foot still shaking low growling on the other side of the door I wanted to look but was afraid he was waiting for me and he would kill me for sure now. I waited for a moment then walked up and looked in, I laughed, cried, and pee’d myself, he was dead or well on his way. He wasn’t getting up to hurt no one or able to call the police and tell them anyone was emotionally disturbed He would NEVER be able to hurt anyone again. 2 Months later I told my stepdad about what happened he took me to see his brother a Chicago Police Officer his brother looked into what happened a couple weeks later he sat me down and told me about the guy. He told me to never be ashamed of what I did it was a good thing the guy was suspected in the disappearances of 6 boys who were never found. To this day I have a hard time believing I lived through that within days after admitting to it my mom she abandoned me into a Psyche Hospital, 45 Years Later here I am.

Suspicious subject wearing a mask heard this guy in a couple different places. This location Patterson and Martin he was running in the street then seen going into a house on Eileen street. I don’t know if that is Santa Maria or Goleta I have only lived here almost 40 years I’d say that is a pretty weird call.
Southbound on Bath street the number 705 MTD Bus one of the riders on the bus had recently Assaulted, the reporting party.
Code 2 medics for a code 40 Drunk in the first Block of South Milpas.

Scanner Reports, Thursday:

Will there was a 415 Fight between 2 males and a female first report was at the Junior High but then the dispatcher said Ortega Park but it was close to the Junior High…. Gee I thoughtI heard some Santa Barbara city councilman was cleaning that park up…There is a nude Sheriff in town and all that Bull Manure…Oh well some guy got a bloody lip, SBPD showed up took care of the situation they always do.
Medical call possible seizures in the 400 Block of North Milpas.
Burglary somewhere in Santa Barbara they did not say where they really don’t have to.
415 Unknown type 800 Block of San Pascual.
415 on an MTD bus State at La Cumbre guy wearing a camo helmet said he had a knife in his backpack. Years ago I worked at Galleria and this guy went in one of the stores I can’t remember why but they called me to complain I had to ask him to leave and he pulled a huge knife on me he was a really scary guy used to be a cook in a restaurant downtown he passed away years ago I was really sad. There is alot of people that carry knives around town jus sayin.
484 12-Pack of Beer 7100 Block of Hollister suspect going toward Girsh Park. then went into a yard on Pacific Oaks and hid in the bushes.
