It was 1974 in the wintertime, I had run away from the Boys Home and was staying with my buddy and his family in their unheated house on the East Side of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The house was a huge 2 story with a heater that was heated by oil, we didn’t have any money for oil so we climbed the fence at Mayflower moving company and ripped off a dozen of their blankets, there were 7 of us in the house. Billy’s Mother was downstairs on the sofa, she was in her 40’s and about as big as Gilbert Grape’s mother, she had a heart of gold letting us runaways stay in her house. Every morning she’d head over to the nearest grocery store and hit the dumpster for the food they threw away, she would go for the potatoes cut off the bad, use the good for the best potatoe soup you ever had. She’d make a huge pot of potato soup, most days on the side there would be powdered milk, margarine, white bread, government cheese, and Louisiana hot sauce. The best meal I ever had made with true Mothers Love. Rest of us were upstairs, Billy had 2 brothers, we had 2 gals with us too, we were all under the blankets on the floor.
It was around 3 am when Billy kicked me awake informing me I was elected to make a 7-11 run for a pack of Marlboro’s. We had scraped .50 cents or so together for a pack me and one of Billy’s little brothers had to go. We were in a rough neighborhood, there wasn’t many white people on this side of town, but it was 3 am, there would not be anyone out or so we thought. We went through a couple yards and alleys to get to the street the 7-11 was on. I don’t think we were heard going between houses as there was a fresh coat of snow on the ground. One of the things I remember about Fort Wayne is how beautiful it was with snow. We were not too far from the store when we saw two black guys coming toward us, they both had on long overcoats and were carrying something underneath I did not know what but I was scared as they got closer. Billy’s little brother started getting angry and I got a real bad feeling. I knew better to keep my mouth shut to not even say “Hello” I kept my mouth shut but as they got closer Billy’s Brother yelled the “N-Word” only feet away. One of the guys not much older than us pulled out a butcher knife out from under his coat and stabbed Billy’s Brother in the stomach slicing upward. I grabbed the kid as he fell into my arms, darkened blood poured from this child violating the innocence of the snow. The killer yelled in my face holding the bloody knife “Do you want some of this too?” I answered back looking directly at him “I did not call you a N*****, I am not racist.” Both of the guys took off running. I wasn’t sure if Billy’s brother was dead or not. I got up and ran the rest of the way to the 7-11. I ran into the store and yelled my friend had been stabbed and was laying down the street on the sidewalk. An armed security guard asked What Happened when I told him he asked, “How come you did not kill the n*****?” I said, “I’m not racist.” I don’t remember much after that, the police came I told them all I knew. I was taken back to the Boys Home. Billy hated me after that, I guess in his mind it was my fault his brother got stabbed, no one else blamed me I never felt at fault but always felt sad and ever since that day I have been afraid of knives all these years later 47 years I’m still afraid of using a knife. I will always remember that early Winter Morning in Fort Wayne back in 1974. I have seen and experienced a lot of shit in my young life even before this as I had taken a life myself though it was not intentional as I hear of these stabbings in Lompoc I am reminded of my past and I feel the tragedy of young lives ended either through death or wasted in prison and all I can do is pray for the violence to end. Amen. Here are your Scanner Reports.

Some people seem to think that human heads are stronger than glass bottles, this is not true. I have been hit over the head with a bottle and it can really mess you up and it does hurt very much especially Pepsi bottles from the 1970’s. Don’t ever hit someone over the head with a bottle it hurts.
