By Roger the Scanner Guy
I knew someone long ago that ran across the 101 and got hit and killed. It happened directly behind my residence on South Milpas. The victim was a female in her 30’s from Florida who was living with a guy in an RV. Word was she was a hooker and with a guy in the bushes behind my house he was trying to rape her she was trying to escape running towards the center divider she got hit by several vehicles, the vehicles crashed into each other, she was killed, in the vehicles there were no injuries. I heard a big boom then cars smashing into each other wheels sliding, smelled rubber burning. I heard the non-injury accident on the scanner then about 20 minutes later a dead body was reported to be on the freeway near the accident scene. I did not call in the accident because I had no idea a death had occurred. After the accident, I was standing in my driveway looking toward the area and I heard a lot of voices, people talking on the freeway as if there was a cocktail party or something, I heard no screaming it did not sound as if anyone was upset or anything. When I heard there was an “1144” in lanes I went across the street and told a guy I knew who was hanging out at Circle K With his RV. He told me his girlfriend was back there with a man, later on, he found out the victim was his girlfriend. In the day guys used to pimp out their girlfriends for drinking and drug money it probably still goes on though I don’t know I never got personally involved with those folks as far as sex or paying for that sort of thing, though I drank with some of them.
I slept on the side of the freeway before I used to camp in the bushes about 20 Feet from the State Street stoplights on 101. I also slept on the Northbound Side just past Anacapa near SUNdown Towing. I slept near the Buick’s joint once on the North Side just past Chapala and just on the other side of Chapala. South of me a vehicle went off the road and into the wall of a building. I used to run across freeways when I was a kid in my Hometown and when I was hitchhiking. I think I crossed here illegally when the stoplights were on the 101 it was safer then. I looked up on the GOOGLE Why homeless people cross the freeway I know why I did it but that was Forty years ago and when your writing about something you want to be sure you know what you’re talking about. One guy wrote that one of the reasons who homeless people are on the freeway or cross one is to access a campsite that can only be reached by the freeway as homeless people are vulnerable to be attacked while sleeping so they sleep in groups, public places or hard to access camping sites. I remember before another lane was put on the 101 here past Milpas street I heard of people camping in the Center Divider as there was access from Milpas street from the old overpass into the center divider…I was a dare devil but not that much of a dare devil maybe the gal I knew that got killed was trying to get to one of those camp sites while trying to get away from the rapist. We will never know. Running across the freeway is a stupid thing to do if it’s a short cut not much time is saved from doing it legal. If it’s a suicide it’s going to hurt like a Sonofabitch and not everyone dies some people end up crippled…As far as drivers go there is really nothing anyone can do to avoid someone running across the freeway in front of their vehicle Pray you don’t hit them that’s about all I can say about that…HERE are YOUR SCANNER REPORTS.
