BIRDS AND SOME PLANTS RID GARDENS OF INSECTS
Most birds eat bugs (including mosquitoes and spiders). Black phoebe, nuthatches, woodpeckers,
chickadees, mockingbirds, robins, bushtits, and hummingbirds chop away at the insects in my
Santa Barbara garden and around my house. In return for their kindness and work ethic, I provide
a bubbly water fountain.
As companion plants in local gardens, one thing to consider is a plant that naturally repels insects.
Santolina, also known as lavender cotton, is one such plant. Santolina herb plants are members
of the sunflower/aster family.
