Due to wide-ranging factors of Thomas Fire, Santa Barbara Unified schools will be closed until after winter break, reopening Tuesday, January 2, 2018

The following message was provided by Santa Barbara Unified School District Superintendent Cary Matsuoka to our school community this evening:

We have made the difficult decision to close Santa Barbara Unified for the entire week of December 11-15, 2017. I appreciate your continued engagement with your school community. Many of us have felt the impact of the Thomas Fire over this last week that has now advanced into Santa Barbara County. We are proud of the work of our staff and families to support emergency personnel, evacuees, students, family members, and fellow colleagues as we continue to find ways to serve one another during this time.

Following the Thomas Fire Operational community meeting held at San Marcos High School this afternoon we decided to close our schools for the remainder of this week, December 11 – 15. This is as a result of wide range of factors that affect our school community including air quality, mandatory evacuations, and developments of the Thomas Fire. We will be assessing our schools in preparation for re-opening following winter break on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

Santa Barbara Unified School District employees are asked to stay home for the remainder of the week.

SBCC

Due to the ongoing nature of this fire, all SBCC campuses will remain closed until Monday, December 18th. This closure includes Main, Wake and Schott campuses as well as Cosmetology and Child Centers.

Staff and Faculty should not come to campus. Students should not come to campus.

EFFECTIVE 11:10 AM DEC 10: Carpinteria Unified Schools and District Office will remain closed this week, Dec. 11-15. School will resume after the holiday break on Jan. 8.

EFFECTIVE 9:30 DEC 10: College School District in Santa Ynez will be closed Monday, Dec 11.

EFFECTIVE 7:20 AM DEC 10: Carpinteria School District, Cold Spring School District, Goleta Union School District, Hope School District, Montecito Union School District, Santa Barbara Unified School District, and Vista del Mar Union School District will be closed Monday, December 11.

Adelante Charter, Peabody Charter, Santa Barbara Charter will be closed Monday Dec. 11.

This is an an official announcement that Santa Barbara Unified School District’s closure will remain in effect Monday, December 11th. All after-school programs will remain closed as well. We continue to closely monitor the Thomas Fire impact to air quality as well as mandatory evacuations and road closures that affect our school communities.

Ensuring the safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority and we will be implementing a reopening plan for all of our facilities that include cleaning ash, assessing our interior hallways and classrooms. Those staff that are able to report to work Monday, will assist in this assessment.

Pending any changes in the Thomas Fire, we anticipate reopening on Tuesday, December 12th to all students and staff.

Cold Spring and Montecito Union are planning to resume school on Monday, Dec. 11.

Santa Barbara Unified, Goleta Union, Hope District are planning to resume school on Tuesday, Dec. 12. Peabody Charter School, Adelante Charter School, Santa Barbara Charter School are planning to resume school on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Carpinteria Unified is planning to resume school on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

SBCC Campuses will remain closed on Sunday December 10 and Monday December 11. Crews will be working to safely remove ash from campus buildings and outdoor areas in anticipation of reopening on Tuesday, December 12.

Students are asked NOT come to campus. Staff and Faculty are asked NOT come to campus.

Early Thursday morning, local school district offices began announcing the closure of schools due to advances of the Thomas Fire towards Santa Barbara County and air quality.

The Carpinteria Unified School District closed on Wednesday and has yet to reopen.

All Santa Barbara Unified schools closed this morning due to changes in the development of the Thomas Fire. All certificated and classified staff were asked to not report to work, but their facilities will be on standby for emergency personnel.

The following districts have announced closures for Friday, Dec. 8:

Santa Barbara City College made the announcement to remain closed through Saturday, December 9. All campuses will be closed Thursday 12/7, Friday 12/8 and Saturday 12/9. This includes all scheduled SBCC activities (including scheduled SBCC Board meeting), as well as the Main, Wake and Schott campuses, Cosmetology Building and all off-site programs.

Students, staff, and faculty were told to not report to campus.

YETI – I’m sure those in charge did so for a reason. ALL school functions are cancelled including my son’s Winter sing festival tomorrow night. The air is toxic right now, look at any pollution monitoring sites. This is nothing I’ve seen in my 41 years here. Masks are sold put and people are waiting on huge lines at Costco for them. NO ONE should be outside unless necessary. So, thanks for your snarky “opinions” about those in charge of our childrens’ health during the day, but I for one am a glad parent that they closed up today.
