Update by Santa Barbara Police Department
On July 2, 2020 at about 12:50 PM a Santa Barbara Police Motor Officer was on patrol in the 3000 block of Foothill Road. He was traveling eastbound at about 30-35 miles per hour approaching the intersection of Foothill Road and Alamar Avenue when a sedan traveling westbound made a left turn directly into the police motorcycle as both vehicles entered the intersection. The Officer was ejected off of the motorcycle, flying over the sedan and landing on the asphalt next to the driver’s doorway. The Officer sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he was treated and released hours later.
The driver of the sedan, a woman in her twenties was driving with a learner’s permit and was being observed by an adult male front passenger. She stated she thought she had enough time to safely make the left turn. Neither person in the sedan sustained injuries.
Officer down in a traffic collision near Alamar and Foothill Road.
Hope he is okay.
Also isn’t there an officer in SB thats been hit twice by cars in the last few years? Hope it wasn’t the same cop.
No that was Mary 3 he is retired now…The officer was injured Hopefully he will be OK…
AMR shut down and transported with non emergency response. Minimal damage so hopefully okay.
Does that include the time a few years ago when 2 SBPD motorcycles riding side by side ran into each other and crashed?
Motorcyclists are so vulnerable, doesn’t matter if you are a cop or not. Gotta have your head on a swivel at all times and even that is not enough sometimes.
These officers are too vulnerable. I understand why we have them but I would rather they all be safe in a SUV. I hope he or she is okay.
Unless it was the “adult supervisor” who told the driver she should gun it and could make it.
Hope her insurance rate will reflect her really poor decision making skills.
Oh for god’s sake, she is a LEARNING DRIVER. Sanctimonious much?
OHHHHHHH, when you put it that way, everything is fine. Wait. No. Most people never damage anyone’s property, never mind almost kill a police officer, when learning to drive.
Glad the officer is ok. I REALLY wish Sheriff and SBPD motorcycle officers would wear ATGATT… they have enough money for a Bearcat, full riot gear, ATVs, helicopters with FLIR, etc, but they can’t put their officers in full gear; hell, they dont even wear a motorcycle jacket… not good. Y’all should look into that for your officers…
Did that really happen? In their 70’s, Mom and Nelly rode their Schwins through the cemetery gabbing awayand collided. It took a grounds keeper to untangle them and get them to their feet. Except for some bruises and a scrape or two they were fine–but never lived it down!
Hope the officer will be OK long term. Sounds as thought the adult male supervising the learner’s driving was not paying attention (nice interpretation) or was incredibly irresponsible to OK the turn – in front of a motorcycle!
Oh please, unless this was an official student driver vehicle with the brake on the passenger side (it wasn’t), there’s no way you can blame the supervising passenger.
I bet they own the equipment already and actively choose not to wear it. Probably gets “too hot” and is “too uncomfortable,” like many motorcycle riders complain and use to justify their choice not to wear ATGATT. Foolish.
Regular old sedans will do, e.g. the newer Chevys (?) the SBPD has. A few SUVs are nice to have, but we don’t need our whole police fleet to be comprised of unreasonably expensive, gas-hog SUVs.
What a drag to hit a police officer. She’ll never live that down. Hope the officer makes a complete recovery.
Thinking you have enough time and then essentially hitting the guy head on is pretty bad…
Maybe the adult was a 21 year old sibling who was busy on their cell phone at the time.
