Over the course of five weeks, City of Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo, will issue a series of short, weekly, COVID-related State of the City Addresses. This is her second address of five.
Murillo stated it’s due to residents following the social distancing guidelines that our region has avoided a spike in cases that could potentially overwhelm our healthcare system.
She emphasized the City Council’s decisions to help reopen sections of the economy, including the closure of State Street to vehicles, free parking in city lots, and allowing outdoor/sidewalk dining.
“The vision is to allow outdoor dining on sidewalks, on-street parking spaces, some closed streets, and on private property to support the re-opening and recovery of the City’s foodservice businesses. This effort aims to stimulate and support our local businesses’ financial stability. We have over 400 restaurants and cafes in our community – many of them locally owned – and they employ thousands of workers,” said Murillo.
Murillo thanked the city staff for their work on these efforts and also frontline workers for providing services to the community.
“Remember we are in a marathon and not a sprint – the virus is not gone away and we must remain vigilant. Wear a face covering and abide by public health directives and we’ll continue to get through this together,” said Murillo.
The 9-minute dialogue aired on Santa Barbara City Television, Channel 18, Tuesday night, and a Spanish version was discussed on Radio Bronco FM 107.7 and La Musical FM 94.5 for the Spanish speaking members of the community.
Things are gonna get REALLY interesting around election time…
Mayor Puddin with another great speech.
well. got through about 3 minutes of that.
after the first awkward side-profile camera angle cut, i was like “what?”…… then comes side cut number 2? now they’re just being weird. Are they trying to highlight that she’s speaking with ‘conviction’ towards empty benches? is anyone actually instilled with confidence by this?
No. No. No. Anthony Wagner, you’re brilliant. But all your great speechwriting cannot put lipstick on this… She’s been such a nothing compared to great leaders that have stepped up and delivered in this crisis for their people. Same with the Debris Flow. Totally tone-deaf to go through with your own inauguration while we were learning 23 people died. She was AWOL on that one too, and Coast Village is in the city of Santa Barbara. She hasn’t got a visionary spark in her body, and she can’t lead. Time to go.
I love her comment @ 1:33 about worry being replaced due to data. I guess she doesn’t read most of the comments here, as most people seem to think the sky is still falling.
Bashing the mayor? She’s got 1000 views on this video. it’s not like she’s even reaching anyone. That is a sign of Reality. please do wake up. Were you actually inspired by these hushed dulcet tones and gestures to an empty room?
The bummer is the council seats elected in 2020 and 2021 are 5 year terms to align with the general elections. Of course 3 year terms were a option, but when you have government electing government, self interest prevails.
Don’t envy these politicos. There lives will be undone by the virus, just as ours have been. They will have the added burden of trying to deal with all of it, from the illnesses to the economic mess. In crises leadership emerges or submerges. It took Lincoln three years to find decent generals in the Civil War, and the U.S. lived through four years of Hoover and the great depression before FDR emerged to lead. It is going to be a rough ride.
What ugliness you all display…you can’t argue policy so you stoop to juvenile personal attacks….
please do enlighten us as to what Policy there actually is in this video… which has not already been argued to death on here?
The crisis peaked in March. It’s now almost June and she has started talking about it?
9:37, your comments are lost on this crowd. This thread is for bashing the mayor because they want her to wave her magic wand and restore the revenues, reopen the businesses, and wipe out any accumulated debt. Plus inspire us to be better people and citizens. Just like so many mayors are doing across this country but somehow ours is a failure. Seems fair, doesn’t it?
Exactly what peaked in March? Are you saying it is over now? Still got people getting sick and dying. Doesn’t seem like it has peaked to me.
that really was a very odd camera angle that makes no sense. It was like 110 degrees off her eye-line. Maybe go for 45 but not behind her. Also, seems like an endorsement/free advertisement to name and show a few select restaurants. Not very fair to all the other restaurants but maybe I’m nitpicking. Overall I didn’t hear a strong message from Murillo and in fact, this is the first time I’ve seen her since she became mayor. Maybe she could be more visible in the community?
