The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) arrested a Santa Barbara man this week after he assaulted a grandfather pushing an infant in a stroller.

Angel Sanchez Jr., 29 of Santa Barbara, has been arrested on two counts of assault.

On Tuesday, December 5, the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff Station received two separate calls of unprovoked attacks near the 26000 block of Agoura Road and Lost Springs Drive/Cottonwood Grove Trail in Calabasas.

Security footage shows around 4:45 p.m., the suspect, described as a Hispanic male in his 20’s, parked a 2005 silver Honda Odyssey minivan in the driveway of a home in a residential neighborhood.

The suspect is seen getting out of the minivan and walking towards a 60-year-old Asian-American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) male who is pushing a stroller with his 10-month-old grandson crossing the street.

The suspect quickly walks alongside the victim, and seemingly without any words or confrontation, sucker-punches the grandfather causing him and the stroller to tumble to the ground. The suspect is then seen walking back to the minivan and driving away while the victim tries to stand up.

It’s been confirmed the suspect is not affiliated with the home where he parked and the grandfather and infant are ok, according to KTLA.

LASD sent out an alert searching for the suspect and his minivan with a Nevada license plate 183W80 with the below flier.

“Although both victims of the assaults were of Asian descent, the motive for the attacks is currently under investigation,” LASD states.

  1. First thought for completely irrational behavior, especially someone in their 20s or 30s, is psychotic illness such as schizophrenia. Family are often in denial of the severity of the illness, and few options are available to them to find long term care. So glad the grandpa and baby will recover, but the next victims may not be so lucky if this guy is released without intensive medication and behavioral monitoring.

  2. To the two (so far) commenters saying this is a mental issue:

Driving to another city, to commit a violent act that is seemingly racist does not equate to mental health instability.

Throw the book at him, he doesn’t need or deserve any help. There is a cell somewhere waiting for him.

  3. Road rage maybe? Did the grandpa walk out in front of him earlier? Schizophrenia? Racist and violent? Seems so random. Could be mentally ill or has severe anger and violence issues. Either way, he should not be behind the wheel on on the streets at all at this point. Lock him up or get him help, but please take his license!

  4. He’s already been found incompetent, per CBS LA. Psychiatric stabilization will presumably be the next step.
I was reading SB Grand Jury report on our jail and wait times for state beds are about 9 months. The report was … interesting.

  5. That fat bstrd only targeted an old guy, then struts off with his stupid haircut like he’s really something. Hopefully, a little jail Justice reaches him from some Asian brothers inside the jail. Jesus Christ, what is wrong with people?
