The Santa Barbara Humane Society (SBHS) is offering free emergency shelter for any cats and dogs evacuated from Montecito and other areas under the threat of debris flow. Animals who board at Santa Barbara Humane Society must be up-to-date on vaccinations, but the SBHS veterinary clinic will be offering free vaccinations and free flea treatments to evacuee animals.
While SBHS appreciates the outpouring of support from those who wish to volunteer during this time, only previously trained SBHS volunteers are currently needed.
This is not the first time Santa Barbara Humane Society has offered free boarding for the pets of evacuees from natural disasters. In 2018, SBHS cared for over 850 animals in the wake of the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudslides. SBHS also opened their doors to the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network for a number of weeks after the Holiday Fire.
“We want to help our community in times of crisis,” said Santa Barbara Humane Society Executive Director Kerri Burns “and right now, the best way we can help is to assure those evacuating that their animals will be safe and well taken care of at our shelter.”
