Santa Barbara County 2020 Election Results

By edhat staff

The Santa Barbara County Elections Office released the semi-official results for the 2020 local election races.

Rep. Salud Carbajal won easily over challenger Andy Caldwell to keep his seat in Congress for the 24th District. S. Monique Limón also retained her seat in the State Senate for the 19th District.

The race between Jordan Cunningham and Dawn Addis is quite close with Cunningham edging out a lead for the 35th State Assembly District. For the 37th State Assembly District, Steve Bennett received nearly three times as many votes as challenger Charles Cole.

In the hotly contested Santa Barbara Unified School Board race, two incumbents retained their seats: Laura Capps and Wendy Sims-Moten. Newcomer Virginia Alvarez edged out the third incumbent, Jackie Reid, to win the third seat on the board.

  1. I was hoping to see at least two make it just to balance the board. I don’t agree with their religious philosophies (or much of the Right’s views on education), but the far left makeup of the board is what is currently preventing our schools from opening and being reasonable. Too much of one sided thinking is not a good thing either way.

  2. GUSD SPED educators were last month “convinced” to return teaching the SPED cohort in person via a $180 monthly increase to their compensation. The mainstream GUSD teachers are very worried about a) the public’s outrage when they learn that teachers are willing to teach in person as long as the “stipend” is high enough and, b) how much of a bump in pay can the mainstream teachers negotiate in order to return to in person teaching. It smells very fishy and the kids remain the big losers.

  3. Thats an interesting view Bosco. Effectively saying, “I don’t agree with their positions or views but they will reopen the schools. Who cares if my 8th grade daughter is forced to listen to pray and never learns about systemic racism and civil rights.” Either way having just 1 of these extremists on the board wouldn’t do much of anything as the others would out vote them.

  4. Well, when you put it that way…that’s a spectacularly good argument for putting other people on the board!!!!! I’d much rather my 8th grader be forced to listen to a prayer or ten (Christian, muslim, Budhist, Pagan, whatever!) and be IN SCHOOL than learning about systemic racism via ZOOM classes.

  5. Yes, right now what’s needed is opinions on the board that will reopen schools (that’s issue #1 for me). None of the current board members seem to understand the actual science and/or have the spine to stand up to the Teachers Union. The current makeup of the SB board can only be viewed as a failure. Change is needed. I don’t think two dissenting opinions are enough to force prayer or prevent education on civil rights. But, it’s also not ok for the whole board to fall in line with the teacher’s Union and reinforce each other’s groupthink. Having a reasonable discussion with those you disagree with is something everyone should do. While I’m still a proud liberal, not everything the left does is always the right thing. The illogical politization of the COVID response within the reopening school debate demonstrates the need for all sides of representation.

  6. Let’s workshop this. Hypothetically, the school board demands the schools reopen. The teacher unions say nah, no thanks. Board pushes harder threatens to fire teachers, all teachers join together in protest, and now there’s a strike with zero teachers. I don’t see how this gets schools open any faster. Boards have to finesse the situation they were given.

  7. Those are good things to learn about! What “heats me” is that they aren’t learning anything right now via zoom!!!! Sure… tell and teach my kids all about systemic racism… just do it in person for god sakes!!!

  8. That’s a very persuasive argument for getting rid of the teachers union!!. They aren’t working… and if they continue to refuse at a certain point they need to be fired and they can go on unemployment like everyone else and new teachers can be hired!!!

  9. And that would be the least popular strike ever! Their kids are going to school, public health says schools can open, public health says schools should open for the health of kids, and lots of people are out of work… some of which because they have to stay home with their kids!!! No… striking is a hollow threat. Doesn’t matter though.. our beloved school board cant/won’t do anything.

  10. A comparison of these results with the Edhat poll numbers would give us an insight into the politics of our Edhat companions. As I have suspected it seems the Edhat trolls lean very far right. Glad to offer some balance.

  11. Remove the political D vs R bills hit.
Newsom, science and data have said for 2 months#chollas could open full time. Newsom is a D, right? So the CA people don’t believe Newsom? They don’t believe the science and data they preach about?
July 23 CDC said kids need to be in school , they are not spreaders.
    Most teachers want kids back.
    Teachers Union is holding out.
    So what’s really going on?
7 weeks ago Newsom, science and data allowed schools to file for a waiver, case by case reopening depending on the area environment. MUS, Cold Spring and private schools in SB filed asking the government scientists if it was ok to open.
The scientists said yes to them.
    SBUSD did nothing.
Then SB moved into Red Tier allowing ALL schools to reopen full time, based upon science and data.
    SBUSD did nothing.
So who are the Teachers Union and SBUSD listening to if they’re not listening to Newsom, science and data?
Students are emotionally, physically and academically hurting.
Numerous other schools around us have opened full time.
So what’s really going on? All those in favor of keeping schools closed, do you have children?
What is your reasoning and how does it supersede the science, data & Newsom allowing full time school?
And don’t say money. SBUSD received emergency funding to reopen, where did that money go?
The CARES act is giving $57 million to CA schools.
SB is 5he capital of non profits helping people.
Teachers Fund just raised $56,000 for schools.
Between our great comm7nity with money and volunteers, don’t use that as an excuse.
And I have a question. Why was there no substitute fir my child’s class when the district knew the teacher would be out on personal leave all week?
66 students, 1 teacher on zoom. Seriously? Inconceivable!

  12. Get, are substitutes trained on Zoom teaching? I bet there is a steep learning curve for them. I was a sub and mostly the teachers had me play videos because they couldn’t know if I knew the material or had any teaching skills at all.
As far as children spreading the virus, risk assessment tools says classrooms are high risk environments. “In a group of 25—about the size of an average class—the model indicates there’s a 67 percent chance in Cherokee County that at least one person has COVID-19, according to the most recent data.”
Plenty of examples of teachers getting sick and dying, and schools reopening and closing again- St Joe’s just did this in our County.

  13. THEY FINALLY LISTENED TO US (and well yeah, public health) !!!! Goleta union school school district opening 5 days per week in person starting January 11! Sorry Pitmix… you can keep ignoring science and, ya know, distorting facts on every post, but the school district finally realized they have to go back. Guess what their plan is… staggered start times, slightly shorter days and erecting some structures outside.

  14. Yeah, my comment is somewhat hyperbolic but look at these: Measure L Edhat vote No 75%, actual vote Yes 52%; Measure M Edhat No 55%, actual Yes 52%; Goleta Mayor Edhat had Aceves/Perotte tied, actual vote Perotte 64%; SBCBofE Edhat had England, winner was MacDougal; Edhat had Richardson winner was DeWard; Edhat had Howell by 58%, he won by 75%. Yes, the most obvious races went to the incumbent Dems in the Edhat poll but not by the number they went in real life. Carbajal Edhat by 59, won by 65; Bennet Edhat had him by 63, won by 75. Etc.

  15. RHS, I’ve noticed it’s really only a handful of far right commenters that just post incessantly making it seem like there’s a lot of them. They’re still outnumbered and the majority of readers are liberal but too tired to engage in the crazy comments. I’ll jump in every now and again but I have a job, kids, a life, and you can’t talk sense with the senseless.

  16. Let, a teacher said that he did not think he could teach to a classroom and be parked in front of a Zoom monitor at the same time in the hybrid model. So is the District going to hire double the teachers? Do they have the budget for that?

  17. DM, my point was that generally the teachers don’t know their subs at all, never met them, so have no idea what they can do. A sub in physical classroom faces real challenges in just maintaining discipline because the kids like to see what they can get away with. A regular teacher at Carp subbed for another teacher once and told me that she was shocked that she faced the same problems as a sub because the kids knew her already. I will try to be clearer for you in the future.

  18. It’s not a pipe dream… We’re going full back!!!! The school board finally realized that you can only ignore the public health recommendations for so long. They realized 19 kids per class was easy doable and safe… and hopefully someone in power had some strong words for the union !

  19. VOR, if you can give me an example of how our discussion on Edhat has caused you to change your views on anything, then maybe the rest of us can follow your shining example. I, for one, have not noticed any movement in the views that you post here.

  20. Politics and politicians suck… and they lie like crazy… so actually you are a perfect candidate!!!!
Trump is horrible and he is going to lose… that’s a win for all! School opening is a win for all too (except of course your beloved teachers union). What you fail to grasp or understand is that you can be a liberal but not just blindly follow. Our school board was lost, useless and incompetent. That isn’t a political thing or statement… it’s fact. The DNC backing a candidate doesn’t mean you have to or should vote for them.
